Relocating ? Is it the Answer?
by Marie King
I moved from Boston to Northern Arizona?six years ago. I am very happy that I decided to relocate. However; I run into people on a fairly regular basis that wished that they had stayed put.
Know Why Your Moving
I moved to be in a warmer climate, which practically cured my arthritis and made my bronchitis a thing of the past. I wanted a community away from the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan area. I desired to live in a place; where there were many artistic, metaphysical and intellectual activities. I also knew that having beautiful surroundings and plenty of outdoor activities would add to the quality of my life. I have all those where I reside. What do you want?
Know the Tradeoffs
I often hear people, who come from the Northeast, complain that Northern Arizona isn?t like, where they?re from. Of course, it isn?t. Whenever you move, there are tradeoffs.
Where I live it takes forty-five minutes to get to a major mall. That doesn?t bother me because I don?t like to shop. The food here is good, but it doesn?t have the variety of cuisines, especially seafood, which I had in Boston. However; their restaurants weren?t the reason that I moved here.
?Dress is informal in this area. I haven?t worn pantyhose for three years and live in jeans and a tee shirt. That kind of informality suits me, but it really frustrates women, who are clothes horses. What things are essential to your lifestyle, and what things are you willing to give up?
Cost of Living
People assume that an area further away from a major city is cheaper to live in. The cost of living in the town that I call home is just about as expensive as living in Boston, one of the costliest places in the nation. Do a comparison for prices of real estate, utilities, services and taxes before you move into a new locale. A lot of times relocating in bad economic times is a way of reducing costs. Make sure that it will actually be cheaper to live, where you?re planning to go.
Job Opportunities
Where I reside; mining is one of the top industries. Most of the good jobs are working for the government or non-profits.?Wages are comparatively low, and many people are self-employed through internet businesses. The complexion of my local job market is very different from the one in Boston, and it may be very different from where you reside.
Be clear on what type of opportunities are available. Know what wages are for the services that you offer. Make sure that you can live with the financial realities.
Relocating is one of the best things that I have done in my life. I would recommend it to anyone. I just suggest that you understand why you?re leaving one place and going to another.
