Redlands Citrus Valley High hoping for a repeat football victory over Jurupa Hills

REDLANDS - The Blackhawks are hoping the second time is also a charm.

With the Citrus Valley High School football team set to face Jurupa Hills on the road in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section East Valley Division playoffs on Friday night, the Blackhawks will look to repeat their Nov. 2 feat against the Spartans.

Citrus Valley (6-5) bumped off Jurupa Hills, 28-21, in a key Mountain Valley League clash to help the Blackhawks finish second in the MVL. Two weeks later, the Spartans (7-4), who had to settle for an at-large berth to the postseason, are looking for revenge, and more importantly, a coveted trip to the semifinals.

Senior Citrus Valley quarterback Dalton Douglas is determined to make sure that scenario doesn't transpire.

"Now, after all these games, we're closer - we've come together," Douglas said. "We're ready to go out and take another step toward a CIF championship."

The Blackhawks' defense will have to contend with sophomore quarterback Damion Wright, who has 1,880 passing yards and 15 touchdowns through the air, and has rushed for 688 yards on the ground, with 11 running scores.

Offensively, Douglas and fellow senior quarterback Justin Lopez will have to energize a Citrus Valley attack which only produced 206 total yards in a 17-0 win over Yucca Valley last week.

Lopez is convinced the Blackhawks will need to jump ahead early to stay up late.

"We have to really come out strong in the first half - we can't be flat at all," Lopez said.
