News in Brief: Signs of trauma documented in living brains

Protein accumulation seen in scans of retired NFL players

By Laura Sanders

Web edition: January 25, 2013

CONCUSSION REPERCUSSIONS

Compared with a brain scan from a healthy man (left column), scans from a retired 59-year-old former NFL linebacker (center column) and a 73-year-old guard (right column) revealed loads of tau protein (yellow and red), deposits that have been linked to repeated concussions.

Credit: UCLA

For the first time, scientists have seen the ravages of repeated concussions in the brains of living people. Brain scans of five retired National Football League players reveal unusual deposits of an ominous protein called tau that used to be identifiable only through autopsy. Tau is a hallmark of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a disease that causes the gradual appearance of mental and emotional problems in people who have experienced repeated brain trauma.

The new method of looking for tau relies on a chemical that affixes to the protein and serves as a beacon, lighting up in PET scans of the brain. More tau turned up in the brains of former NFL players than in other men, particularly in deep brain areas called the thalamus and the amygdala. The more concussions a player sustained, the more tau scientists found, Gary Small of UCLA and colleagues report online January 22 in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. This ability to track CTE in players may help researchers understand what happens in brains that get repeatedly hit over the course of a professional football career.

Temps plummet as arctic air covers much of US

In several areas of the country temperatures hovered around zero, but the coldest place being International Falls, Minn., where the temperature was -20 degrees. The conditions were especially difficult for those who work outside. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

A full two-thirds of the country was in the grips of a blast of cold Arctic air Wednesday with temperatures falling to some of the lowest marks in years and wind chills plummeting to dangerously low levels.

The nation?s capital is experiencing what could be its coldest stretch in almost 10 years, according to NBC Washington?s Chief Meteorologist Doug Kammerer, and brutally cold weather and snow continued to hit much of the Northeast and Great Lakes area.

In the D.C. area Wednesday morning, temperatures were between 16 and 21 degrees with single-digit wind chills, according to the National Weather Service.?

Elsewhere in the Northeast and New England, the coldest air in two years has blanketed the area with subzero wind chills moving in, a stark contrast from the mild weather residents had been experiencing this winter.

In Maine, the arctic air mass settling over the state caused temperatures to drop nearly 75 degrees in one week ? following record highs on Monday -- the Bangor Daily News reported.

Meanwhile the National Weather Service has issued freeze warnings Wednesday for as far south as Florida.

And in the Midwest Wednesday, very cold highs ranging from 10 degrees below zero to five degrees above were forecast from North Dakota to northern Wisconsin.

Temperatures are expected to linger in the mid-20s for the rest of the week, and a moderation of temperatures wouldn?t come until early next week.

Information Technology|Certification Intelligence | Mymortgagesaver

Information technology news and technical data regarding certification intelligence for examination education is the primary purpose of this short article. Many individuals don?t know the difference between computer training and certification exam training. I would prefer to inform everybody else what the differences are. Computer training is class knowledge with planned classes or online training in regards to the career field related to I t. Let me explain! You might want to be a Server Administrator. To begin with you will need some knowledge somewhere to be able to be proficient in the topic and probably get a 2 or 4-year degree or receive some online education with a qualified instructor. You might just want to receive a certificate in this field and have a few courses. This would be looked at computer training. It certification intelligence on exam training is what you need to be able to be fully prepared to move your certification exam. After computer education you may have a qualification or a certificate but you still don?t have a certification that?s acknowledged by Microsoft, CIW and CompTia or every other. If you have computer education that qualifies you to be a Server Administrator then you?ll want to get licensed in Microsoft, CIW or CISCO. Certification exam education specializes in preparing your certification exam to be passed by you. An IT Certification exam is unlike any other exam that you?ve had in college or school. There are two extremely important points to consider when finding your way through a certification test. They?re the proper study method and having related material that pertains to the actual assessment that?s updated with the existing market. There are merely a number of sites on line that supply Certification assessment training. The reason why I wrote this informative article is to provide information and details about the best sources on accreditation exam training. There are several students of information technology that want this information simply because they are seriously interested in passing their accreditation exam on the 1st attempt. This short article is not about marketing but about helping those who find themselves not informed about Certification test training. Yet another reason for this information is training concerning it accreditation. There are several colleges and on line training about information technology that?ll prepare you for a certain subject or area but there are but a couple of areas where you can find information technology certification intelligence on test training. Say you want to become a Technician and so that you?re knowledgeable about that industry you study at a college or receive on the web training and receive a diploma or certificate in that area but you still aren?t qualified until a certification exam is taken by you. Even after school in order to be licensed in the area you?ll need to plan an certification examination with prometric or pearsonvue that you wish. Where you could possibly get training on how to pass your it certification test how many sites do you know. Examination training isn?t the same as computer training. You will need understanding of how to study for your certification exam and since an IT exam is not the identical to the exams in college to know the proper study strategies. You?ll also have to know where to get updated material about your certification exam because if you are studying material that is obsolete then you?ll not move your certification exam. Certification exam training is important if you plan on driving your certification exam initially so you can avoid 3rd and 2nd exam fees. Some individuals might already be focusing on the task in the career they need, such as a Server Administrator, Desktop Support Technician or perhaps a PC Repair Technician. They might have had previous instruction before employment but have never obtained a certification. Because their employer requires it they probably know their job and are very proficient in their work and field but desire a certification. Any computer training was not needed by them. So they can go their certification exam they only need Certification exam training. I hope you receive the picture now. Looking for a good source then visit: billnaugle.com a guide to post

Steve Jobs threatened Palm with lawsuit over employee poaching

According to a court filing made public yesterday, Steve Jobs threatened Palm with a patent lawsuit in order to stop them from attempting to hire employees away from Apple. The communications between then-Palm CEO Edward Colligan and Jobs took place in 2007. The emails became public as part of a civil action brought against Apple, Google, Intel by five workers that alleged that these companies illegally conspired to end competition for one another?s employees. The threat from Jobs didn?t phase Colligan. According to Reuters:

Colligan told Jobs that the plan was "likely illegal," and that Palm was not "intimidated" by the threat.

?If you choose the litigation route, we can respond with our own claims based on patent assets, but I don't think litigation is the answer," he said.

We knew most of this before, but the patent threat is new. No poaching deals are potentially illegal as they tend to lead to lower wages for workers because no other company in their field will hire them away from their current position, giving them little or no leverage to negotiate better salaries and benefits.

Apple, Google, Adobe, Intel, Intuit Inc. and Walt Disney Co's Pixar all settled with the US Justice Department in 2010 in order to avoid prosecution over these agreements. Since the current legal action is civil, these companies may still be liable. Judge Lucy Koh -- yes, the same Lucy Koh as the Apple vs Samsung trial -- is currently considering whether or not to allow the lawsuit to proceed as a class action, which gives the plaintiff?s a chance to receive a larger settlement should they win.

So what do you think, is business just business, or did Apple and Steve Jobs cross the line?

CORVALLIS, Ore. Residents living near an e-waste recycling site in China face elevated risks of lung cancer, according to a recent study co-authored by Oregon State University researchers.

Electronic trash, such as cell phones, computers and TVs, is often collected in dumps in developing countries and crudely incinerated to recover precious metals, including silver, gold, palladium and copper. The process is often primitive, releasing fumes with a range of toxic substances, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, a group of more than 100 chemicals.

PAHs, many of which are recognized as carcinogenic and linked to lung cancer when inhaled, were the focus of the study. Over the course of a year, researchers collected air samples from two rooftops in two areas in China.

One was in a rural village in the southern province of Guangdong less than a mile from an active e-waste burning site and not surrounded by any industry. The other was Guangzhou, a city heavily polluted by industry, vehicles and power plants but not e-waste.

The scientists concluded that those living in the e-waste village are 1.6 times more likely to develop cancer from inhalation than their urban-dwelling peers.

"In the village, people were recycling waste in their yards and homes, using utensils and pots to melt down circuit boards and reclaim metals," said Staci Simonich, a co-author of the study and a professor of environmental and molecular toxicology at OSU. "There was likely exposure through breathing, skin and food including an intimate connection between e-waste and the growing of vegetables, raising of chickens and catching of fish."

The researchers estimated that of each million people in the e-waste area, 15 to 1,200 would develop lung cancer on account of PAHs over their lifetimes, while the likelihood in the city is slightly lower at 9 to 737 per million. These approximations do not include lung cancer caused by smoking.

The study also found that the level of airborne carcinogenic PAHs exceeded China's air quality standards 98 percent of the time in the e-waste area and 93 percent of the time in the city.

The study was published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology. The OSU Superfund Research Program provided assistance for the study. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provided funding for the study. Eight researchers collaborated on the project, including OSU graduate student Leah Gonzales and scientists from China.

Mexicans form vigilante patrols against drug gangs

Dario Lopez-Mills / AP

An armed and masked man guards a roadblock at the entrance to the community of Cruz Quemada, near Ayutla, early Saturday. Hundreds of men in the southern Mexico state of Guerrero have taken up arms to defend their villages against drug gangs, a vigilante movement born of frustration at extortion, killings and kidnappings in a region wracked by violence.

By Mark Stevenson, The Associated Press

AYUTLA, Mexico ??The young man at the roadside checkpoint wept softly behind the red bandanna that masked his face. At his side was a relic revolver, and his feet were shod in the muddy, broken boots of a farmer.

Haltingly, he told how his cousin's body was found in a mass grave with about 40 other victims of a drug gang. Apparently, the cousin had caught a ride with an off-duty soldier, and when gunmen stopped the vehicle, they killed everyone on the car.

"There isn't one of us who hasn't felt the pain ... of seeing them take a family member and not being able to ever get them back," said the young civilian self-defense patrol member, who identified himself as "just another representative of the people of the mountain."

Now he has joined hundreds of other men in the southern Mexico state of Guerrero who have taken up arms to defend their villages against drug gangs, a vigilante movement born of frustration at extortion, killings and kidnappings that local police are unable, or unwilling, to stop.

Vigilantes patrol a dozen or more towns in rural Mexico, the unauthorized but often tolerated edge of a growing movement toward armed citizen self-defense squads.

"The situation Mexico is experiencing, the crime, is what has given the communities the legitimacy to say, 'We will assume the tasks that the government has not been able to fulfill,'" said rights activist Roman Hernandez, whose group Tlachinollan has worked with the community forces.

The young man and his masked cohorts stop cars at a checkpoint along the two-lane highway that runs past mango and palm trees to Ayutla, a dusty town of concrete homes with red-tile roofs where pigs, chickens and skinny dogs root in the dirt.

In this photo taken Friday, a masked and armed man checks the identity of a driver at a roadblock at the entrance to the town of El Pericon, Mexico.

The men wear fading T-shirts and leather sandals, and most are armed with old hunting rifles or ancient 20-gauge shotguns hanging from their shoulders on twine slings as they stop cars and check IDs.

Hunting 'los malos'
The reach of drug gangs based in Acapulco, about 45 miles away, had intensified to the point that they were demanding protection payments from almost anybody with any property.

In a region where farmworkers make less than $6 per day, the situation grew intolerable.

"When they extorted money from the rancher, he raised the price of beef, and the store owner raised the price of tortillas," said a defense-patrol commander who wore a brown ski mask.

Because the patrols are not formally recognized by the government ? and they fear drug cartel reprisals ? most members wear masks and refuse to give their full names.

The self-defense movement has spread to other towns and villages such as Las Mesas and El Pericon. Recently Associated Press journalists saw 200 to 300 masked, armed men patrolling in squad-size contingents and manning checkpoints. Some had only machetes, most had old single-shot, bolt-action rifles.

Waving guns, they stop each vehicle, and ask for driver's licenses or voter IDs, which they check against a handwritten list of "los malos," or "the bad guys." They sometimes search vehicles and drivers.

The movement so far seems to be well accepted by local residents.

"In less than a month, they have done something that the army and state and federal police haven't been able to do in years," said Lorena Morales Castro, who waited in a line of cars at a checkpoint Friday. "They are our anonymous heroes."

Some officials, too, have cautiously approved of the do-it-yourself police. Guerrero Gov. Angel Aguirre offered to supply them with uniforms so they wouldn't be confused with masked gang members, but he also said he is trying to eliminate the need for vigilantes by beefing up official forces.

But clearly, the vigilante squads here present problems. The vigilantes in Guerrero are holding, by their own account, 44 people accused of crimes ranging from homicide to theft.

Nobody outside the village of El Zapote, where they are being kept in a makeshift jail, knows what conditions they are being held in, or what charges, if any, there are against them.

Members of the vigilante squads in Guerrero say that what counts is their relationship with the community and resistance to corruption.?

"When the people are united, it doesn't matter if it's a .22, a 16-gauge shotgun or 20-gauge. It's that when we are united, not even bullets from an AK-47 can defeat us," said the self-defense commander in Las Mesas. "They can't kill us all."

Mexico's drug war is also part of a drug culture with roots in music, movies and even religion.

Bethel, Vermont Fish Hatchery Damaged By Tropical Storm Irene Almost Fixed

BETHEL, Vt. (AP) ? The tanks that are normally swarming with fish at the national hatchery in Bethel are empty, but the repairs needed after Tropical Storm Irene flooding inundated the facility are almost done and officials say biologists should be able to start raising fish there again this spring.

The tanks that hold the fish, both inside and out, have been scrubbed and disinfected, the electrical system is mostly repaired, the wells that supply the fresh water for the facility have been cleaned and the pumps are being rebuilt. The layout of the hatchery has been changed in a way that experts hope will make it less prone to damage from future flooding.

"We'd be ready to turn on the pumps, as some of the stock-car racing fans may say, kick the tires and light the fires sometime by March or April," said Wade Jodun, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's operations manager for the Northeast.

When Irene hit in August 2011, the White River overflowed its banks and left a trail of destruction. A number of communities up and downstream from the hatchery were devastated and it washed out several miles of Route 107 just upstream.

Floodwaters swept into some of the hatchery's outdoor holding tanks, flushing thousands of hatchery-raised Atlantic salmon and other fish into the river. The flood also exposed the hatchery to invasive species such as rock snot, a non-native form of algae that can overwhelm rivers and streams.

The Fish and Wildlife Service closed the hatchery for repairs. Thousands of large Atlantic salmon brood stock were donated to Native American groups for use in ritual ceremonies while nearly half a million lake trout that had been intended for Lake Ontario and other locations were destroyed rather than risk that they could spread contamination. Some staffers were moved to other locations.

All told, the flood caused more than $5 million damage to the hatchery, just above the White River off state route 107. Given the complexities of funding and engineering the needed repairs, it could have taken up to five years to get it operating again, Jodun said.

The Fish and Wildlife Service found almost $3 million to help pay for the repairs, and repairing what was needed to get the fish operations moving again was made a priority over damage to roads, fences and other infrastructure.

"The stars just really aligned for us," said Jodun.

Biologists still haven't decided what kind of fish will be raised in the hatchery, but the topic will be discussed this month at a meeting at the hatchery that will also deal with other issues, said Dave Tilton, the manager of the service's western New England fisheries operations.

"What to do with it is still developing. It's developing based on lots of conservations with our partners with the states of Vermont and New York," Tilton said.

Among possibilities for the hatchery are raising lake trout and landlocked salmon for stocking in Lake Champlain or housing brood stock from state hatcheries, said Eric Palmer, the fisheries director for the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife. No final decisions have been made, he said.

"It's just been conceptual discussion about what the partner states see as the value for that facility," Palmer said.

Before Irene, Fish and Wildlife raised many of the more than 100 million Atlantic salmon stocked in Connecticut River tributaries in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont over the past several decades in hopes of restoring the fish to the watershed. But last summer, the federal government abandoned that project because not enough salmon were living to adulthood and returning to the Connecticut River to justify the expense. The loss of the Bethel hatchery helped prompt the decision.

Jodun said the Bethel hatchery should be able to get back to about 75 or 80 percent of its capacity this year. It's not expected to be back to 100 percent capacity until 2014.

Repairing the facility had kept the remaining staff busy and it has given them an opportunity to do things that had been needed for some time, hatchery manager Ken Gillette said.

"We'd like to see things get going, but we've got to do it and do it properly," Gillette said. "We're all looking forward to it."

From bullying to relationships: Mapping our online communications

Jan. 19, 2013 ? When we typically think of kids who are the victims of school bullying, what comes to mind are isolated youth who do not fit in. A new study, however, shows that when that harassment occurs online, the victims tend to be in mainstream social groups -- and they are often friends or former friends, not strangers.

The research is part of a burgeoning field of study into the effects of social media on everyday relationships and behavior. Personality and social psychologists are finding surprising ways in which people's online environments and relationships reflect and influence their real-world ones, as presented January 19 at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) annual meeting in New Orleans.

"Researchers have known for a while that individuals give unique cues about who they are with the things they own, clothes they wear, things they say and do. However, though these cues are informative to knowing who someone truly is, they were not always so easily accessible to our entire social network," says Lindsay Graham of the University of Texas, Austin, one of the presenters. "Now with much of our lives being lived online, and the boundaries having been blurred between who sees these cues and who doesn't, it is all the more important to pay attention to the kinds of impressions we are giving off to those around us."

The emerging image of the cyber-bully

Some statistics indicate that as many as 160,000 students a year skip school just to avoid being harassed, and texting and social media are making it easier than ever to harass classmates. Victimization from schoolmates has been correlated with everything from depression and anxiety to thoughts of suicide and struggles with academics.

To study so-called "cyber-aggression" -- harassment that occurs online -- Diane Felmlee of the Pennsylvania State University and Robert Faris of the University of California, Davis, studied 788 students at a preparatory school in Long Island. They mapped the students' social network structure relative to online harassment: asking students to name their close friends, which schoolmates they have picked on or been mean to, and which schoolmates had picked on them.

What they found was that cyber-aggression occurs in the mainstream of the school and largely among friends, former friends, and former dating partners. They also found that non-heterosexual students were more likely to be the victims. Examples of the types of harassment found online were posting humiliating photos, texting vicious rumors, posting that a student is gay and making fun of him, and pretending to befriend a lonely person.

"Cyber-aggression occurred most often among relatively popular young people, rather than among those on the fringes of the school hierarchy," Felmlee says. "Those engaging in cyber-aggression also were unlikely to target strangers but often were in close relationships with their victims at one point in time, close enough to know how to harm them."

The researchers found that some of the processes that contribute to aggression in school include jockeying for status, enforcing norms of conformity, and competing for girlfriends or boyfriends.

How our online image affects our relationships

Even more innocuous online interactions can prove problematic for offline relationships, psychologists are finding. One new study shows that disclosing more about ourselves online actually lessens intimacy and satisfaction among romantic couples.

"We found that contrary to the research on offline self-disclosure, which shows that more offline disclosure leads to higher intimacy and relationship satisfaction between both romantic couples and friends," says Juwon Lee of the University of Kansas, "online self-disclosure was negatively associated with intimacy and satisfaction between couples."

In a series of studies, Lee and colleagues found that greater usage of Facebook predicted lower satisfaction in romantic relationships but not in friendships. In one study, the researchers created two different mock Facebook walls: one that had a high degree of self-disclosure (e.g., many personal pictures and personal status updates such as "Just had a fight with Mom" or "Pretty interesting training at work today") and one that had a low degree of self-disclosure (e.g., neutral status updates such as "Nice weather today"). They asked the participants to imagine that one of the walls was their partner's and then measured their relationship intimacy and satisfaction. Those who had the walls with high levels of self-disclosure reported less intimacy and satisfaction with their relationships compared to those with the more minimal walls.

"Disclosing a high degree of personal information online, regardless of whether or not the information is related to your partner or relationship, will likely negatively affect your romantic relationship," Lee says.

How our online image matches us offline

Researchers are also investigating how closely the information we disclose online mirrors who we are offline. In two new sets of studies, psychologists looked to World of Warcraft players and to profiles of people who frequent cafes and bars.

"With more and more of our lives being lived both in the physical and virtual worlds, it's important to understand the kinds of impressions we give off to others through the traces we leave behind in our environments," says Graham of the University of Texas, Austin, co-author of the studies with Sam Gosling. "Whether we're creating a screen name or avatar for ourselves, or broadcasting that the bar or coffee shop down the street is one of our frequent hangouts, we are inevitably telling those around us something about who we are as individuals."

In the study about World of Warcraft players, the researchers found that although people can make consistent judgments about a player's personality, those impressions do not match how the players view themselves. In the second set of studies, they examined 50 randomly selected cafes and bars in the Austin area and looked at the profile pictures of people who frequent those establishment using the social networking site Foursquare.com. Just by looking at the profile photos of the frequent patrons for each location, observers were able to assess the personality the typical patron (e.g., extraverted, likeable, narcissistic), the activities likely to occur at the establishment (e.g., drinking, surfing the web, flirting), and the atmosphere or "vibe" of the location itself (e.g., sophisticated, clean, kitsch-y).

For comparison, the researchers sent a second set of observers to the same locations to make the same assessments in person. "Interestingly, we found that when we compared the impressions formed from just the profiles with those formed from the establishments themselves, there was quite a bit of overlap," Graham says. "Impressions were consistent no matter what type of stimuli an observer sees -- suggesting there is some cohesion in the types of people who go to certain places and the places themselves."

How communication channels shape what we say

Aside from creating images of ourselves online, people increasingly use social media -- including Twitter, Facebook, and blogs -- to communicate a variety information, including about consumer products. Exactly which modes of communication we choose, online versus offline, affects how we talk and what we talk about, a new study finds.

Jonah Berger of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and colleagues analyzed more than 21,000 everyday conversations on- and offline. They found that online posts and texts provide people the opportunity to take pauses in conversations, and thus more carefully craft what they say. As a result, those conversations tend to be more interesting than conversations face-to-face or over the phone.

The researchers measured interest by "coding" the conversations, which came from the Keller Fay Group, a research marketing firm that tracks which brands and products consumers talk about. Brands such Christian Dior and products such as the Audi A6 scored as highly interesting, while brands like Ross and products like insurance scored as not at all interesting.

"These findings shed light on how communication channels shape interpersonal communication and the psychological drivers of word-of-mouth more broadly," says Berger, who is author of the upcoming book Contagious: Why Things Catch On.. "They underscore the old maxim of thinking twice before you open your mouth."

Investing In A Gold Retirement Plan | Liberty

Gold has been utilized for thousands of years as a secure and lasting keeper of worth. Through these unpredictable economic periods, it?s once again come forth as a leading investment and may actually be the best investment asset. Let us compare and contrast gold with the asset classes which most often consist a retirement program. Stocks and shares, bonds, and savings accounts all depend on the success of a different institution or person for value. Gold alternatively, does not. This quality alone makes it one of the best investments to keep for retirement protection.

There are numerous ways to invest in this precious metal including acquiring gold bars, coins, gold ETFs, and gold mutual funds. Coins tend to be regarded as highly valuable since they could also be collectors? goods. Their price does not only come from their weight, but also their rareness.

Although investing in gold may be simple, gold 401k investing is a bit more challenging. The Tax Payer Relief Act passed in 1997 permits individuals to incorporate rare metals, for example gold, as part of their own retirement plans. While it is possible to utilize a 401k to be able to acquire gold investments, you will likely be unable to do it using a traditional 401k account.

The majority of company-subsidized 401k plans include polices about the kinds of investment which may be obtained on the plan. Thus, it?s commonly a requirement that a person should first move the existing 401k program into gold 401k. Only at that time would they be capable to start making an investment in gold.

Have this in mind, gold 401k is actually a gold Individual Retirement Account that is backed by a previous 401k. The only way to actually possess gold as an investment is via a gold Individual Retirement Account.

Tips To NOT Overspend in 2013 + a $100 Cash Giveaway : Rather ...

I am proud to be a part of a fun personal finance blog project and giveaway organized by Jeffrey over at Savings Advice.com.?The theme of this giveaway is the ?No Spending Challenge?. It can?definitely?be a challenge to not?overspend. As I have already documented, I have a huge?Weakness For Bright and Shiny Gadgets which makes it especially tough for me. I swear?they just call out my name and slowly reach in my pocket for my credit card. With that in mind here are a couple tips to avoid overspending on stuff you really don?t need, followed by the easy entry form to win $100 cash via PayPal. Make sure to get yourself entered?

Freeze the Dam Things

The tip of freezing your credit cards in a huge block of ice was first introduced to me back in 2007 by Lynnae at Being Frugal.net. This may seem silly and childish, but if you are in a position where you can?t afford to add any more?expenses?to your credit card balances, freezing your cards is not so silly. For many, it is a necessity. The key here is to make sure you freeze them in enough water that you can?t read the numbers. By going without your credit cards you force your brain to re-think how you spend money.?The?Take-Away: By the time you defrost the dam things the impulse to buy will have worn off.

Enforce A Cool-Down Period

The next time you?re brain is telling you ?I need this, I need this NOW? try this technique. Make your brain think about something else for a 10-minute cool down period. Read a magazine, do jumping jacks, mow the lawn, stare at sun, whatever, just do?something?other than think about the product you want to buy.?The?Take-Away: If you can get through the 10 minute period the impulse to buy will have worn off.

Have you tried either of these techniques? If so, were they?successful? I look forward to your comments. Now go win?yourself?$100 bucks!

Groundbreaking for $15M Eisenhower Park ice rink | Long Island ...

Long Island Business News Published: January 17, 2013

9:43 am Thu, January 17, 2013

Nassau County officials and the developers of a new $15 million ice skating rink will break ground Thursday at Eisenhower Park.

Called Twin Rinks at Eisenhower Park, the complex will include Ferraro Brothers Ice Center, an 85,000-square-foot world-class facility with two NHL regulation-sized rinks and one outdoor recreational hockey rink run by former NHL players Chris and Peter Ferraro. The Ferraros have partnered with Joel and Ronald Friedman of Jericho-based law firm SilvermanAcampora in the venture.

Nassau chose the Twin Rinks development group to construct the facility after issuing a request for proposals in June 2012, according to a statement. The group has secured a 50-year license with fees paid to the county. The project will be built with private funding and no taxpayer dollars.

Twin Rinks is expected to have a $35 million impact on restaurants, hotels and other area businesses in its first five years of operation.

The center will be home to at least two youth hockey organizations, including the Long Island Gulls Amateur Hockey Association and the New York Junior Bobcats. It will also play host to in-house figure skating programs, learn-to-skate programs, a recreational youth hockey league and adult hockey leagues.

?The vision my administration holds for the Nassau County Hub continues to take shape with the addition of Twin Rinks in the famous Eisenhower Park,? County Executive Ed Mangano said in the statement. ?I am delighted that Nassau County was able to partner with Chris and Peter Ferraro to bring this outstanding facility here. Creating this kind of sports entertainment destination will enhance our quality of life as well as create jobs and opportunities for residents.?

Because men do not go through a well-defined period referred to as menopause, some doctors refer to this problem as androgen (testosterone) decline in the aging male -- or what some people call low testosterone. Men do experience a decline in the production of the male hormone testosterone with aging, but this also occurs with conditions such as diabetes.
