For some women in China, no sun is good sun.

Not satisfied with sunscreen, some Chinese women are taking to the beach in face masks in an effort to protect their skin from UV rays and maintain a porcelain appearance - a sign of affluence in some parts of the country.

Face-kinis, as they are being called, have become widely popular at the Qingdao beach in northeast China, where women can be seen any given day wearing the colorful gear.

According to China Radio International, the beach balaclavas and full bodysuits were initially designed to combat sunburn, but are also effective at repelling insects and jellyfish.

But there?s more than practicality behind the masks? popularity.

?I?m afraid of getting dark,? one mask wearer, Yao Wenhua, 58, told The New York Times earlier this month.

?A woman should always have fair skin,? she said. ?Otherwise people will think you?re a peasant.?
