The benefits of belonging to an association and openly sharing with fellow members have been stunning to watch over the years.
CPAmerica?s foundation, ?Improving through sharing,? is a reality for our members.
During nearly 8 years of writing feature articles for CPAmerica?s and CPAConnect?s member newsletters, I have interviewed numerous partners and CPAs from our member firms. A universal theme has been how each person and his or her firm was helped by another member ? whether through a full-blown joint engagement or something as simple as a prompt, reliable answer to a pressing question.
Add CPAmerica?s membership in Crowe Horwath International ? and the unique relationship between the larger CPAmerica firms and their smaller counterparts who are members of CPAConnect, and the stories become even more compelling.
Members share and collaborate in a number of ways:
Joint engagements
A member firm won an international engagement with the help of Crowe Horwath?s Hong Kong and United Kingdom offices. The CPAmerica member?s take on the joint engagement: ?If we didn?t have Crowe Horwath as a resource, we would not have been able to even come to the table.?
A firm in the midwest used the connection for four engagements in just a two-month period. They helped with:
- A client establishing an entity in Canada
- A transfer pricing issue in Germany
- A client with Korean tax issues
- A corporation doing business in China
Two east coast firms, a firm in the midwest, and another in the southeast teamed to work on a number of issues with a $90 million company, including an audit, oil and gas reserve issues, and an IPO.
Two southeastern firms teamed up to serve a large healthcare client, then referred the client to yet a third member firm when the client moved to another state. Said one partner: ?The partnership allowed us to address the opportunity, which we may have had to turn down without their healthcare expertise.?
A southwestern firm member won an international engagement with a company doing business in The Netherlands, China and Japan. ?I have complete confidence that we can serve a complex international client with ease? because of our relationship with international firms.
A northwest member firm won a South Korean client with the help of a southern firm plus Crowe Horwath?s Hong Kong office. Said the leading partner, ?This process, with a number of others from various entities involved, was seamless ? a group of professionals working together toward a mutual goal.?
Practice management assistance
Several firms experiencing growth or wanting to change their firm culture have engaged leading partners from other successful firms to lead the way.
A southeastern firm got help from a partner at a southwestern firm, and said, ?We want to grow, not just for the sake of growth, but to improve opportunities for young staff, to be able to attract larger clients, and to broaden our specializations. We got some great direction and ideas.?
Sponsorship relationships
A smaller CPAConnect firm in the northeast wrote to say, ?We have a good comfort level with our sponsor. We know they won?t go around our backs and try to take our clients. And, with their help, we also know our clients will never outgrow us.?
