Monovision is a form of vision correction in which one eye is corrected to spot distance clearly and the other eye corrected for well-defined near vision. This is generally employed if you?re presbyopic.
Presbyopia starts in the early forties. It is a condition in which the lens inside the eye hardens and focusing up near becomes unpleasant. Typically, this is corrected with reading, bifocal or mulifocal specs.
Contact lenses can also be employed to correct presbyopia if you do not want to wear glasses. Multifocals contact lenses can be used to spot well at distance and up close. A form of laser eye treatment which corrects the eye in this way is known as presbylasik.

Some irritation with monovision correction is expected as your brain and visual system adapt to the new means of seeing. Most successful monovision contact lens wearers adapt to the view within a few days and appreciate the freedom from spectacles for both distance and near sight.
Unsuccessful patients commonly report:
Headaches. This is a bigger concern if the prescriptions used in the two eyes vary greatly.
Problems driving in particular reverse parking the car. This is due to turning to the sides to check how the car is lined up on either side; the distance eye will give clearly sight while the reading eye will show blurred vision.
Discomfort with prolonged computer usage. Since one eye is for far distance and the other for reading (typically at 40cm), there isn?t an eye corrected for the intermediate distance where the computer screen is situated. This means the computer screen is slightly blurred and for clear cut vision you would have to lean closer to the screen which can lead to postural problems.
However, if monovision contact lenses are successful for you, this visual set up can be permanently had with laser eye treatment. The operation for this is exactly the same as with normal refractive surgery, except one eye is intentionally left short sighted to compensate for the reading.
