Proven Advice You Can Utilize for Best Practices in Business ...

Business Management Best Practices Proven Advice You Can Implement

Regular redefinition of your goals is the key to more successful business management. We all know most of them will not do that, or they think they are but consistently fail with it. There are some principles of management that seem to be in opposition with higher priority goals. But, if you are a business manager, you can choose to be your own person and go against this.

Most of the time the main issue for most managers isn?t a lack of good policies, it is the lack of following them that gets them in trouble. It takes courage to do the right thing in business day in and day out. Figure out what goes into successful business management and then do that. Husqvarna 435

Most of us have seen the good and the bad when it comes to management. Since this is about successful management principles, then look at how and when you offer feedback. Don?t focus on the negative or things you want to change when you offer feedback?make sure to include some positive things as well.

The truth is that they are doing exactly what you?re paying them to do. But you can do so much more when you tell them about all the things they?re doing right. You should also work to keep your feedback positive as well as constructive. You want them to correct their actions, so tell them what needs to be done and how they can achieve it. Cuisinart 66-17

So many managers make mistakes but are afraid to admit it. But nobody is fooled when they try to cover their tracks. It is an adult workforce and they are all smart enough to see what you?re trying to do. It does nothing but help your own credibility when you have the courage to stand up and admit when you have made a mistake.

If you do this, people will believe that you?re brave and that you?re honest. The effect won?t be immediately apparent but it is going to be a far reaching one. You will, however, see a vast improvement in employee attitude and performance. Cajun Injector Electric Turkey Fryer

Most businesses, and departments, usually lack creativity for the most part. Creativity is not something that is absolutely essential for your department to run. But you can tap into that when you are looking for ways to become more efficient or cut costs. The scenario you might want to consider is cutting your staff to fix some problems that you may have. You might want to, instead, bring people together and brainstorm some solutions. By putting people under the gun, and pressuring them to come up with a solution, you can find solutions quickly. Without pressure, you can still achieve similar results and find solutions.

Lots of the time the higher ups will try to put the kibosh on a manager who tries to implement new business management techniques.

This is a scenario that will happen every single day in countries all over the world and not a lot (if anything at all) can really be done about it. Try not to let it get to you too badly, if you are truly passionate and no longer want to continue to work where you are, you can always go elsewhere.

What You Really Don't Understand About Home - Rebel-Lion Net

While tricky or potentially dangerous home improvement jobs are best left to professionals. But there are many things you can learn to do around the house yourself. Learning to perform home improvement jobs is an immense confidence booster and will allow you to take control of your property. These tips should help you build a better knowledge of home improvement.

To increase the safety and value of your home deck or patio, you can add metal or wooden railing to the edges or even an ornamental gate leading into the yard. Railing can also enhance the appearance of your outdoor living area by serving as a place to attach decorative lighting or gardening containers.

Prevent mold in your home by properly ventilating your kitchen and bathrooms. Vent fans pull moisture up and out of the room, reducing the moisture that mold and mildew needs to thrive. You will be rewarded with a healthier home and a shower that may be less prone to ugly mildew stains.

Install exhaust fans in all of your bathrooms, your laundry room and above any cooking surfaces. Venting moist, humid air outdoors reduces the chances of mold or mildew forming inside your home. Not only that, but lowering indoor humidity can also prevent condensation from becoming trapped inside your walls, where it could eventually lead to rot.

When making home improvements, try going with granite tiles rather than a granite slab. A granite slab for a countertop can cost over $5,000. If you choose to go with tiles, you can expect to spend around $300. Tiles will give your countertop the granite look that you want, at a fraction of the price.

Unless your carpet is very worn or outdated, try steam cleaning it before replacing it. If your goal is to sell your house, all you need to do is make a positive first impression. Often cleaning carpets will achieve this goal, and replacing them becomes unnecessary. Hiring a professional steam cleaner can save you thousands over replacing carpet throughout a house.

Bugs tend to plague every household. A great way to ensure that you have it under control is by vacuuming and moving things around daily. Also, pinecones are actually a great remedy to keep bugs away. Collect pinecones and display them in a bowl to: repel the bugs, and add a chic touch to your decor.

Before you commit to a new paint color for the exterior of your home, spend some time driving around and looking at homes that you like the look and color scheme of. Paint chips are too hard to envision, so seeing it in person can help you make a better decision.

If a contractor expects you to pay a huge amount upfront for home improvement work, don?t choose him. You should expect to pay $2,500 as a down payment to ensure the contractor shows up, and then about 10% of the total budget on the first day. Not a penny more!

Your head may be spinning from all the advice and expertise you have just read. But take these tasks one at a time. Step by step, you can transform the problems and shortcomings of your home, into reasons for pride. Yes, you fixed those things. Better yet, when the tasks are finished, you can sit back in your favorite chair with a feeling of pride.

Here's who should be on college football's playoff selection panel (Hicks)

Those who always hated the polls and their place in determining the teams in the BCS national championship game will be happy to know their days are numbered.

With the official movement to a four-team playoff in 2014, the polls no longer will play a part in deciding the matchup.

Now the bad news: A selection committee will make that call. Look on the bright side: At least when you're not happy, you can cuss out the committee or its members and might actually be heard. That wasn't possible with a poll or those wacky, number-crunching computers.

So who should be on the committee? And how many should be on it?

I would select one former coach from each of the 11 conferences and a representative of the independents. Then, I would add five who are not coaches but have a strong association with college football. A 17-person committee would ensure several viewpoints, and the odd number would prevent tie votes.

It's one man's opinion, but consider these candidates: For the five open positions, candidates should have done more than just played the game, but also enjoyed success off the field. For those reasons and others, my choices for those slots would be Archie Manning, Keith Jackson, Grant Teaff, Gene Washington and Roger Staubach.

Manning continues to play a part in the game. Jackson is someone who has a great history in the game and knows its history. Teaff, as a former executive director of the College Football Coaches Association, would be a good fit. Washington, inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in the Class of 2011, is also a successful (yet retired) businessman. Staubach offers positives on several fronts.

So what of the former-coach candidates? Here are some suggestions:

SEC: Vince Dooley. As a long-time coach and former athletics director, the Mobile native would bring a lot to the table.

ACC: Bobby Bowden seems an obvious choice. One of the all-time winningest coaches, the recently retired Bowden knows the game and what it means to play for titles.

Big 12: May get some argument here, but Gene Stallings, who attended and coached at Texas A&M, would be a good pick.

Big East: Dick MacPherson, the former Syracuse coach, has a long career at a high level of success.

Big Ten: There are a few possibilities here, but former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr might be the right pick.

Pac 12: Former USC coach John Robinson seems an obvious selection.

Mountain West: Former Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry would bring a strong voice to the group.

Mid-American: How about Don Nehlen, who coached and played at Bowling Green?

Sun Belt: Former FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger, who spent time at other schools across the country and who won a national title, would be a strong selection.

Western Athletic: Let's go with former Fresno State coach Jim Sweeney.

Conference USA: Let's go with former Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower, who also played at USM.

Independents: Nope, not a former Notre Dame coach. I'd pick former BYU coach LaVell Edwards instead.

It's a good group with strong voices and as good a list to start with as any.

Why Fish Oil Omega 3 For Puppies is a Good Idea | Pets And ...

I don?t know a thing about you, but if you?re anything like me, then bringing home a new puppy can be one of the high points in life. And if you?re also like me you want to ensure the health and development of your new little friend. That?s why I?ve found that fish oil omega 3 for puppies is a good idea. Experts will tell you that the essential fatty acids contained in this oil strengthen and support heart, skin, coordination and sight, while preventing disease.

Joint health is an important concern of dog owners. Nothing is more heart-breaking than watching your dog grow up to have debilitating ailments like hip dysplasia and arthritis. However, veterinarians are suggesting you give your developing pet proper joint support with the addition of omega 3 for puppies. The powerful anti-inflammatory agents contained in this supplement will keep your dog leaping, bounding and playing like the spunky little puppy you brought home.

Dry, irritated patches on the skin can also be improved with fish oil omega 3 for puppies. Not only does this supplement possess soothing, healing qualities, it also promotes a shiny, healthy coat.

Given the fact that most puppy food lacks the addition of omega 3, it only makes sense to add a daily supplement to your puppy?s diet. But you should be choosey when it comes to finding a supplement that will give your puppy the maximum benefit. Look for a fish oil omega 3 with high levels of DHA. Also check that the supplement has been processed through molecular distillation to remove any dangerous toxins which may have been present in the fish.

You may be surprised to learn that you can share your supplement with your puppy. No special product for animals is necessary. My personal research led me to a quality fish oil product that costs under twenty dollars for a month?s supply. Since dogs only need one tablet a day, it lasts twice as long as the double dose I take.

Make no mistake about it! Fish oil omega 3 for puppies is a good idea. Our dogs rely on us to keep them well and, in return, they give back so much love and enjoyment. Why not return that love by supporting their long-term health? If you?d like more information about the superior supplement I give my dog, please visit my web site.

Greinke remains unbeaten vs. Reds

By JOE KAY

AP Sports Writer

updated 3:54 p.m. ET June 27, 2012

CINCINNATI (AP) - No sidestepping it. The Milwaukee Brewers felt they had to win this game.

After dropping four in a row and falling 8 1/2 games out, the defending NL Central champions were feeling the pressure on Wednesday. They got two-run homers from Rickie Weeks and Cody Ransom that set up an 8-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds and eased their angst.

"We needed it," manager Ron Roenicke said.

They had the right guy on the mound to get it.

Zack Greinke (9-2) remained unbeaten against the Reds, allowing two runs in six innings. Greinke improved to 4-0 in six career starts against first-place Cincinnati, which now leads the Brewers by 7 1/2 games.

"We've been playing good all month, just not really putting any streaks together," Greinke said. "We should be winning more games than we are.

"We're a little bit out, but we've got a lot of talent on this team. If we get on a little roll, things can change."

Bailey (5-6) has had nothing but trouble against Milwaukee, falling to 0-5 in 10 games with a 6.50 ERA. He left after failing to get an out in the fifth inning, trailing 5-2.

The Brewers came to town hoping to take at least two of three and get back in the race. A slumping offense held them back the first two games. They didn't even manage a hit until the eighth inning of a 4-3 loss on Tuesday night.

Milwaukee broke out with 11 hits on Wednesday, including two doubles, a triple and two homers.

"One thing the Brewers have always been able to do is hit the ball out of the ballpark," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "If you don't make quality pitches, they'll reach the fences."

The Brewers wasted a bases-loaded, none-out chance to break the game open in the seventh inning, failing to score. Milwaukee put it away with three in the ninth off Jose Arredondo, who walked Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart with the bases loaded.

Weeks hit a two-run homer in the second off Bailey, who snapped his glove toward the ground in anger as soon as the ball left the bat. Center fielder Chris Heisey jumped for the ball at the wall, but couldn't quite reach it.

Weeks' first homer since May 26 left him 11 of 20 career off Bailey with a pair of homers. It also made it 65 consecutive games at Great American Ball Park with at least one homer, the longest such streak since an 80-game stretch at Coors Field in 2002-03.

Ransom hit a two-run homer in the fourth for a 5-1 lead. Since the Brewers claimed him off waivers from Arizona on May 23, he'd been batting only .152 with one other homer.

The Brewers loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, but Norichika Aoki struck out and Ransom was caught in a rundown off a failed suicide squeeze attempt with Nyjer Morgan, who got ready to bunt but pulled the bat back when the pitch was low. Morgan then popped out.

"He should have tried to bunt at it," Roenicke said. "We did some interesting things today."

Morgan got tangled with a fan as he reached into the right field stands to try to catch a foul ball in the ninth inning. The fan reached for the ball and grabbed Morgan's glove. The outfielder yanked it away, and the fan yelled something at Morgan, who waved as he went back to his position.

"Our hands just got tangled up," Morgan said. "One of those things. I gave him a little `get-off-me.' He was doing his part of being a fan and trying to help his team out."

Greinke allowed five hits and a pair of runs in six innings, including Ryan Ludwick's solo homer. Greinke is 4-0 in his last six starts overall, allowing a total of only eight runs.

Ludwick had another solo shot in the ninth off Livan Hernandez, his second multihomer game of the season.

Reds Gold Glove second baseman Brandon Phillips got hit in the face by Ramirez's arm while tagging him out on a steal attempt in the third. Phillips was a little dizzy and left the game three innings later as a precaution.

NOTES: The Brewers completed a 2-4 trip and returned home for a day off, followed by seven games against Arizona and Miami. ... The Reds head into the All-Star break with an 11-game trip to San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. ... OF Ryan Braun was out of the Brewers' lineup with a tender left elbow, hit by Bronson Arroyo's pitch in the first inning on Tuesday night. Braun finished that game, but the elbow was bothering him a day later. ... Stubbs and 3B Scott Rolen were out of the Reds' starting lineup, getting some rest. ... Reds rookie SS Zack Cozart singled in the eighth, snapping an 0-for-19 slump.

HBO gives Bush's head a makeover on 'Thrones'

HBO

Before and after: HBO gave the spiked likeness of George W. Bush a major "Game of Thrones" makeover.

By Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter

HBO has done a number on the controversial "Game of Thrones" scene depicting what resembled the severed head of former President George W. Bush.

The cable network has edited and restored the season-one finale of its period drama to its digital platforms after performing a radical face-lift on what producers acknowledged that a scene in the episode depicted a model of the 43rd president's severed head on a spike in the hour.

PHOTOS: Spoiler alert! From 'Game of Thrones' to 'Mad Men' -- TV's most shocking deaths

In the new scene, the model has a drastically smaller chin and nose and what appears to be a considerably smaller face.

?

HBO yanked the episode -- and halted DVD shipments of its season-one?"Thrones" boxed set -- after showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss noted the likeness in a commentary included in the best-selling set, adding that the decision to use the model was motivated by budget and not by politics.

STORY: 'Game of Thrones' showrunners, HBO apologize for Bush's head on spike

"George Bush's head appears in a couple of beheading scenes. It's not a choice; it's not a political statement," the duo said in the commentary. "We just had to use whatever head we had around."

The duo apologized after the story went viral, with HBO issuing a stern statement condemning their actions.

STORY: HBO yanks Bush head 'Game of Thrones' episode, halts DVD shipments

"We were deeply dismayed to see this and find it unacceptable, disrespectful and in very bad taste," the network said at the time. "We made this clear to the executive producers of the series who apologized immediately for this careless mistake. We condemn it in the strongest possible terms and have halted all future shipments of the DVDs, removed it from our digital platforms and will edit the scene for all future airings on any distribution domestic or international."

The Washington Post first reported the news.

Turkey jet crisis unlikely to pull NATO into Syria

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Syria's downing of a Turkish military jet has the feel of a turning point that could drag Western powers into a conflict that is spiraling out of control.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has vowed to hold Syria to account, while Britain's foreign minister said Damascus won't be allowed to act with impunity.

But for all the hard talk, the prospect of Western military intervention in Syria remains remote, at best.

For one thing, military action is unlikely to get the support of either the U.N. Security Council or the Arab League, and outside intervention without the blessing of both of those bodies is all but unthinkable. And there is little appetite among the 28 NATO countries ? of which the U.S. is the largest ? for another war in the Middle East.

Libya was hard enough, and for a many nervous months it looked as if that conflict might end in an embarrassing stalemate for the West. And Syria would be tougher than Libya. Syrian President Bashar Assad's army is better equipped, better trained, better paid and far more loyal than was that of late Libyan leader Moammar Gaddhafi.

So for the moment, despite the increasing violence and the staggering number of deaths, action by the international community seems to be limited to sanctions and strong words.

And so it was on Monday, when foreign ministers from the 27 European Union countries condemned Syria's downing Friday of a Turkish jet, but said the bloc would not support military action in the troubled country.

"What happened is to be considered very seriously," said Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal. Having gotten his denunciation out of the way, he let the other shoe drop: "We do not go for any interventions."

Turkish officials have said the jet mistakenly strayed into Syrian airspace, but was warned to leave by Turkish authorities and was a mile (1.6 kilometers) inside international airspace when Syria shot it down. The Turkish pilots are still missing.

Turkey immediately called a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, NATO's governing body, on Tuesday to discuss the incident. Any NATO member can request such consultations if their territorial integrity has been threatened.

An alliance diplomat said ambassadors will discuss Turkey's concerns ? and would likely condemn the downing.

"But there won't be anything more specific than that," said the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of standing rules.

Turkey, too, appeared to be attempting to moderate the situation, trying to balance a response that would assuage domestic outrage over the shooting, while avoiding a conflict. Turkey has been one of the fiercest critics of Assad's crackdown. But at this point, it has no wish to inflame already-heightened tensions.

A Turkish government official said the government was trying to ratchet up diplomatic pressure on Syria, where activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed in the 15-month uprising. He said the country was still working out what steps to take ? though they would not include military intervention.

"We are not talking about war, but we will keep the pressure on Syria and give it no chance to catch its breath," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules.

Mustafa Kibaroglu, a professor of international relations at Istanbul's Okan University, said that by calling Tuesday's emergency meeting, Turkey was trying to show Syria that it has the full support of NATO and the European Union.

But he dismissed the possibility the alliance would activate a rule in its founding treaty ? Article 5 ? that declares that an attack against any NATO country shall be considered as an attack against them all.

"Unless there is another ... act of provocation (from Syria), there will be no activation of Article 5," Kibaroglu said.

Syria has said it was unaware that the F-4 Phantom jet belonged to Turkey, and that it was protecting its air space against an unknown intruder. In the past, Israeli warplanes have penetrated Syrian airspace by flying over the Mediterranean coastline.

Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the downing was an accident, caused by the "automatic response" of an officer commanding an anti-aircraft gun. The man saw a jet coming at him at high speed and low altitide and opened fire, Makdissi said.

Analysts said that, although the latest incident will likely be contained, the conflict in Syria is now threatening to draw in other nations.

"Syria's apology will probably quell the immediate outrage," said Barak Seener, a Middle East expert at the Royal United Services Institute, a British military think tank.

"But it's increasingly clear that as the conflict escalates there will be a spillover effect with regional consequences," he said. "While NATO will not get involved yet, this illustrates that international actors will increasingly be sucked into the conflict."

Still, there is a sense of war-weariness in NATO, an aversion to any more involvement in the Middle East after last year's conflict over Libya.

The alliance's primary focus remains the costly war in Afghanistan, where the alliance still has about 130,000 troops, a decade after the ouster of the Taliban regime. Although NATO forces enjoy overwhelming superiority in numbers, firepower and mobility, the guerrillas are showing no sign of giving up.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has repeatedly said that the alliance would need a clear international mandate, and regional support, before it embarked on a mission in Syria.

Last year, the alliance launched air attacks on Libyan government targets only after receiving a mandate from the U.N. Security Council, along with backing from the Arab League.

But in Syria's case, the Arab League hasn't been able to agree on the need for military intervention. Even Syria's different opposition groups are riven by divisions over whether outside military intervention would help or hurt. Some in the Syrian opposition argue that it would reduce their country to rubble, leaving them nothing on which to build a new future once Assad was gone.

And Russia and China ? both veto-wielding members of the Security Council ? have consistently shielded Assad's regime from international sanctions over its violent crackdown on protests. Russia also has continued to provide Syria with arms, despite Western calls for a halt in supplies.

Last week, President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the Syrian crisis on the sidelines of a Group of 20 economic conference in Mexico.

The meeting ended without apparent agreement on how to end the violence.

David Beckham has been bothered by a troublesome hamstring, but could play against Vancouver on Saturday (Victor Decolongon / Getty Images / June 17, 2012)

Galaxy tonight

VS. VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC

When: 7:30.

Where: Home Depot Center.

On the air: TV: KDOC, KWHY; Radio: 1150, 1330.

Records: Galaxy 5-8-2, Vancouver 7-3-5.

Update: The Galaxy, riding its second two-game winning streak of the season, is beginning to show signs that it might be waking from its season-long slumber. Wednesday, the Galaxy rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Real Salt Lake, the league's best team, behind two scores and an assist from Landon Donovan, who doubled his goal total for the season. Plus, the Galaxy will have striker Robbie Keane back from international duty for the first time in six weeks, though he's unlikely to start. More likely to play is David Beckham. The Galaxy is playing for the third time in seven days and though Beckham has been bothered by a troublesome hamstring, Coach Bruce Arena said the midfielder has looked good in training. Vancouver, also playing its third game this week, is coming off a draw with the New York Red Bulls that ran its unbeaten streak to four in a row.

I happen to think that Obama?s been a much better president than people give him credit for. He?s in a very difficult situation. You?ve got a Congress that is very polarized and partisan. There are problems all over the world. Our two big markets, China and Europe, are in big trouble? And I agree with the President on many of the social issues. I?d like to see him do more, but you?d always like to see him do more? It?s easy to say that the President should be doing more, but he?s got a lot of things to balance.

QUITO, June 24 (Reuters) - Lonesome George, the last remaining tortoise of his kind and a conservation icon, died on Sunday of unknown causes, the Galapagos National Park said. He was thought to be about 100 years old.
Lonesome George was found in 1972 and had become a symbol of Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, which attracted some 180,000 visitors last year.
"This morning the park ranger in charge of looking after the tortoises found Lonesome George, his body was motionless," the head of the Galapagos National Park, Edwin Naula, told Reuters. "His life cycle came to an end."
George was believed to be around 100 years old and the last member of a species of giant tortoise from La Pinta, one of the smallest islands in the Galapagos, the Galapagos National Park said.
The giant Galapagos tortoises, which can live up to 200 years old, were among the species that helped Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution in the 19th century.
The Galapagos National Park is considering embalming George's body so that it can be displayed in the park, Naula said.
A spokesperson said the park plans to carry out a necropsy to determine what may have killed the tortoise.
Scientists had been trying to get George to mate since 1993, when they introduced two female tortoises of a different subspecies into his pen. They laid eggs twice, but they were infertile.
The pen where George lived was visited by thousands of tourists every year, who often had to scramble with each other to take pictures of one of the rarest creatures on Earth.
The islands often attract celebrities, including Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt earlier this year.
Tortoises were hunted for their meat by sailors and fishermen to the point of extinction, while their habitat has been eaten away by goats introduced from the mainland.
Some 20,000 giant tortoises still live on the Galapagos. (Editing by Sandra Maler)

(AP) ? Meter by meter, Ashton Eaton kept swallowing up real estate on a track that has always felt like home.

Second by second, the clock to the side of that track ticked away ? daring him to cross the finish line in a time that would put his name in the record books.

Eaton was every bit as relentless and stubborn as that clock Saturday. He set a personal best in the exhausting 1,500-meter finale and is now the world-record holder in the decathlon ? the cream of the crop in the event that determines the world's best athlete.

"It's like living an entire lifetime in two days," Eaton said.

He finished the grueling two-day event with 9,039 points in the U.S. Olympic trials to beat Roman Sebrle's 11-year-old mark by 13 points.

Eaton joined the likes of Bruce Jenner, Dan O'Brien and Rafer Johnson among the Americans who have held the world record. He did it on the 100th anniversary of the first Olympic decathlon ? and many of the American greats who have made history in the event were on hand to watch Eaton do the same.

He did it in terrible weather ? drizzle, rain, cold and then, finally, sunshine as he got ready for the final 1,500-meter push.

"He was in position for it, and he went for it and there was no letdown," O'Brien said. "The most impressive thing was that he kept up his intensity in this weather."

Eaton, the 24-year-old and a former NCAA champion for University of Oregon, needed a time of 4 minutes, 16.37 seconds in the 1,500 to break the mark. He finished in 4:14.48.

When it was over, he bent down and put his hands on his knees, then brought them up to cover his mouth. Tears were falling ? elated and shocked all at the same time.

A few minutes later, he took the mini American flag he'd been handed as a newly minted member of the U.S. Olympic team and stabbed it into the turf near the scoreboard that displayed his accomplishment: "World Record Decathlon. Ashton Eaton. 9,039 points." Photographers lined up for the historic shoot. Certainly, Eaton will own a copy or two by the time this night is over.

"I wanted it to be a special event because this is my home state, my hometown, my home university," he said to the crowd at Oregon's Hayward Field. "And just from the start, I just wanted to perform well."

What to do for an encore?

We'll see in six weeks in London, where he'll go in as the favorite, along with the man he beat, defending world champion Trey Hardee, who finished 656 points back.

"Going into London, I'm not going to change a thing," Eaton said. "Clearly."

Chances for an American medal sweep in London, thought to be a good possibility, were vanquished when defending Olympic champion Bryan Clay fell during the hurdles. He finished 12th.

Pretty much everything else on this memorable evening in Oregon got second billing ? though there was one big question mark when the night ended: Allyson Felix left the stadium thinking she'd lost the third spot in the women's 100 to Jeneba Tarmoh by less than 0.0001. But after a lengthy review, officials declared the race a dead heat, then huddled to figure out how to break the tie for the final spot.

Elsewhere, Lolo Jones' leaned at the finish line to earn the third and final Olympic spot in the 100 hurdles by 0.04 seconds. Dawn Harper won in 12.73. Tyson Gay made it through his first 100 heat cleanly, while LaShawn Merritt, Jeremy Wariner and Sanya Richards-Ross all advanced in the 400.

Nobody, however, covered more ground, or did it better, than Eaton.

He opened his pursuit Friday by setting world-best marks for the decathlon in his first two events, the 100 (10.21 seconds) and long jump (27 feet). He had a mark of 46 feet, 7 1/4 inches in shot put, cleared 6-8 3/4 in the high jump and ran the 400 in a driving rainstorm in 46.70 seconds to finish the first day in the mix for the world record.

He returned Saturday to equally dreary weather, but didn't slip. The results: 13.70 seconds in the 110 hurdles, 140-5 inches in the discus, and 17-4 1/2 in the pole vault. His javelin throw of 193-1 meant he would need to top his personal best by at least 2.57 seconds in the 1,500.

The sun finally peaked out shortly before Eaton made it to the starting line, illuminating his green and black shirt and neon-orange shoes. He stayed on pace the entire time and crossed the line with nearly 2 seconds to spare.

Eaton also overtook O'Brien's American record of 8,891 points, which he set in 1992 ? nine years before Sebrle became the first man to break 9,000 points.

Back in 1976, Jenner put the decathlon squarely in the spotlight, winning the Montreal Olympics and becoming a celebrity when he returned home. He was on the front of the Wheaties box back then, and the fact that he's on the front of it now ? as part of a retro marketing campaign ? is as good an argument as any to prove the event no longer has the stranglehold on the public that it once did.

But that hardly diminishes this accomplishment.

Eaton went through the large part of the first nine events in dreary weather ? a long jump in drizzle, the 400 meters in a driving downpour. He smiled through most of it, and when he was introduced before the final 1,500 race, he waved to the crowd, then put his hands together to try and close the deal.

It was, he said, more than he expected.

"I thought I'd get a good 100, a good long jump and from there, just have a go at it and make the team," Eaton said. "But when you're in this place, in this atmosphere, this is what happens. I'm so glad I was able to be a part of it."
