In Asia, piracy is still quite a rampant cultural consumer buying behaviour, and though trends are changing, there are startups or young businesses who would? purchase pirate-copies for a fraction of the price. What are the potential dangers for entrepreneurs to purchase cheap softwares or systems, compared to the originals?
Pierre-Marc: When someone buys software, it implies they trust the software provider to supply them with code that performs the functionality they want and nothing else.? If you buy software from an untrusted provider, it is impossible to guarantee it will not come with unwanted functionalities such as information stealing or unwanted advertisement delivery.
?What trend do you see the functions of the malware would evolve in, in the next 2 to 3 years. What would the malware want when it infiltrates a business? system in the future trend?
Pierre-Marc: Information stealing is definitely a growing trend.? We also see a lot of extortion attempts using malware.? For example, a malware like Win32/LockScreen will block access to a computer until the user pays a ?ransom? to the attacker.? This is a big money maker for cyber criminals and we think it is a trend that will continue growing.
?Are there any grants provided internationally by organisations to help startups, entrepreneurs and new businesses to invest more into online protection systems?
Ignacio: There are several organizations supporting startups, entrepreneurs and new business through education and awareness regarding the different threats they face when going online and which actions can be taken in order to protect their systems. However, there aren?t enough organizations providing financial help to business so they can implement software or hardware solutions.?ESET?is actively working on creating relationships with businesses associations in order to give them better opportunities to acquire security software.
?Coming into Asia, many startups and entrepreneurs are still reliant on governments and their agencies for funding or the extra push for them to adopt a more serious measure towards online protection. What roles do you think governments and their agencies can play today to encourage more entrepreneurs and startups to adopt a safer and more secured online security system?
Ignacio: In order to have a safer internet, everybody has a role to play. Besides supporting the appropriate legal framework against cybercrime, governments shall create and maintain initiatives where businesses are advised on the protection of their businesses and software security vendors should work closely with the different government agencies to create a synergy that will help companies to be more protected through a number of different actions that can include education and awareness initiatives as well as actions to promote the adoption of legal and secure software.
