Whalen scores 20 to lead Lynx past Storm 78-70

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? With Seimone Augustus and Maya Moore around, Lindsay Whalen's focus generally isn't on scoring. That doesn't mean she can't.

Whalen scored 20 points to lead the defending champion Minnesota Lynx in a 78-70 victory over the Seattle Storm in the opener of the Western Conference semifinals Friday night.

"Of course we know they're going to pay a lot of attention to Seimone and Maya, they're great shooters and great players," Whalen said. "We all know we have to step it up and make plays as well."

Augustus scored 19 points, Moore added 16 and Rebekkah Brunson had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Minnesota. Whalen also tallied six assists and four rebounds.

The Lynx shot 46 percent against a Storm team that held opponents to a league-low 39 percent this season, and hit 22 of 28 free throws ? including 8 for 10 from Whalen.

"They have multiple weapons out there," Seattle coach Brian Agler said. "If you give too much attention to any one person, someone else will take advantage of it. Tonight, (Whalen) took advantage."

Rookie reserve Shekinna Stricklen scored 13 points to lead the Storm. Katie Smith and Lauren Jackson added 12 points each, with all of but one of Jackson's coming in the first half.

Game 2 is Sunday at Seattle.

Jackson, a three-time WNBA MVP, didn't play in any of the teams' four regular-season games as she was training with the Australian national team for the London Olympics. The Lynx won three of those matchups.

Jackson played a season-high 27 minutes, but it wasn't enough as Seattle shot just 39.7 percent from the floor and never led. Minnesota improved to 18-0 when holding opponents below 40 percent this season.

"I didn't get the looks I was getting in the first half," Jackson said. "They changed their defense up. We definitely have to look at how we're going to combat that next game."

The Lynx, who went 16-1 at home in the regular season, turned the ball over nine times in the first 20 minutes and led just 33-27 despite Seattle's 29-percent shooting from the floor in the first half.

But Augustus and Whalen scored six points each and Brunson added three more as Minnesota opened the third quarter on a 15-8 run, and extended the lead to a game-high 17 on Candice Wiggins' 3-pointer with 2:38 left in period.

Seattle then answered with an 11-3 run to close the quarter, and responded again with a 9-2 run over a nearly 5-minute stretch when the Lynx jumped back ahead by 13 on Moore's runner with 6:38 to play. But six points was as close as the Storm would get, as Moore and Augustus hit clutch shots in the final two minutes and Minnesota made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 32 seconds to seal the victory.

"I thought we got decent shots, we were playing well, just all of a sudden we're not scoring and not getting back on defense," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said. "We have to have that focus when we don't score, they don't score. That's what let them back in it, a string of missed shots and then they made the barrage of 3s."

The Lynx and Storm face off in the postseason for the first time since the 2004 Western Conference semifinals, which Seattle swept en route to the first of its two league titles.

Minnesota is trying to become the first back-to-back champion since Los Angeles accomplished the feat in the 2001 and '02 seasons. The Houston Comets won the league's first four titles from 1997-2000.

9 steps to the perfect online dating message

Leslie Wood / BuzzFeed

?

By Ouiser Boudreaux, BuzzFeed

Online dating: It is not that hard, and yet so many people make it so hard. I?ve been documenting OKCupid atrocities for a while now, and a lot of themes crop up in the terrible messages that daters send me for, um, critiquing. This is how to send a semi-decent online dating message in nine easy steps.

BuzzFeed

One paragraph
A one-sentence message probably isn?t saying enough, but you also don?t want to send a?novel. Responding to a few items in a person?s profile will take somewhere between three and eight sentences; if you find yourself writing a?six-paragraph missive, work that delete key.

Be original
We can tell?when your message is?copied and pasted?to multiple people. Sure, it?s a pain to actually read through profiles and send unique messages to each person, but aren?t you here to find a date? Learn a little something about the person you?re messaging, and reference that in your communiqu?. ?Hey gurl, luv ur pics? is not going to get a response. More likely to get a response: a message that is directly responsive to several things in the object of your affection?s profile.?

More from BuzzFeed:

Don't be weird
So you?ve caught on that ?hey wuzz up? is generally understood to be an unoriginal message. Congratulations! However, copying and pasting some?bizarre, rambling message isn?t going to trick someone into thinking you wrote all of that for them. We know you?re trying to be ?random? or ?funny? with your ridiculous message about?getting married/having babies/getting divorced/giraffes or whatever other inappropriate thing you are messaging to dozens of people at once. It?s not clever. It also doesn?t trick anyone (other than the slowest people on the Internet) into thinking you wrote that totally nonsensical message just for us. Funny is good, but if you are not actually funny, don?t strain anything trying to be. Straightforward and nice is infinitely better than trying to be funny and failing miserably.?

BuzzFeed

Maintain a 1:1 message ratio
Do not send multiple messages. There are lots of reasons why someone might not message you back. There are lots of reasons why someone may sign into OKCupid, check their messages, and not message you back. They simply might not be interested in you. Or, they might be checking their inbox quickly, and will respond later. Or, they might not check their inbox very often. But the quickest way to get yourself classified as a psycho is to message someone more than once without getting a reply. You messaged them. They saw it, or will see it. Now have patience, or set your sights on one of the 10,000 other single people in your area. Repeat messaging says, ?I am a creep with boundary issues.? And sure, there?s someone out there for everyone, but you will widen your dating pool by not being a creep with boundary issues.

Make it substantive
Yes, we?re all animals here and yes, dating is initially about physical attraction, but there has to be something more to make a relationship (or even a not-totally-painful date) work out. If you?re sending a message, the recipient already knows you?ve looked at their pictures and find them attractive. So instead of stating the obvious, point to what it was that attracted you to their personality (or at least the fragment of their personality that they put on the Internet).

Message people who might reasonably message you back
Does her profile say she?s a lesbian and you?re a straight guy with a weakness for?Justin Bieber haircuts? Sorry pal, but she?s not gonna be into you, no matter how appealing her floppy hair is. Do you live in Tennessee and are up for some long-distance chatting but she?s in New York and wants someone local? Move on to someone who?s interested in people of your gender, location, age, etc. The beauty of Internet dating is that we all get to specify what we want. Respect that and don?t waste anyone?s time ??including your own.?

Be nice
You would think ?don't be a jerk? would be obvious, but there are apparently?legions?of people (mostly dudes) who adopt crappy pickup-artist tactics in their online dating lives, and think they might get lucky by sending vaguely (or?blatantly) insulting messages to unsuspecting recipients (negging?is actually a thing!). Is there some low-self-esteem lady out there who might respond to a message about how ugly she is? Sure, maybe, but the odds are slim ? and since this is the Internet, even women who have been strongly socialized to be nice to cretins in bars are able to hit the delete key. You?re better off ditching the crappy, manipulative dating tactics and sending a nice, normal message.?

BuzzFeed

Keep it clean
Unless both of you make it clear in your profiles that you are on this site for sex and only sex, keep the message PG ??yes, even if there?s a mention of something sexual in the person?s profile, and yes, even if you think your sexual reference is cute or funny or clever. We all want to get laid and we all have our sexual proclivities, and if we like something in particular we may mention it on our dating profile. But even if there?s a recognition that we, like almost every other adult human being, sometimes enjoy having our genitals touched, there?s no need to go all porno upon first introduction. There?s no need to go even a?little bit?porno. Until you?ve gone actual porno in real life, leave the porno-chat alone.

Keep it positive
No one wants to date sad-sack, and no one wants to hear about your terrible past dating life the first time they talk to you. We?re all Internet dating here ??it follows that we are all single and perhaps don?t want to be. So don?t whine about your lack of a love life, don?t lament the fact that you?re such a?nice guy?but women are such harpies, and definitely?don't threaten to kill yourself?because you?re lonely. Sell yourself! If you want extra credit (and a better chance at a response) be a little bit witty. Remember that nearly everyone likes someone who takes an interest in them. So respond to what?s in their profile and ask a question or two. Don?t make it The Sad-Face Show. Keep it breezy.

Stick to these rules, be kinda funny, try not to be a clich? machine (you love to laugh and couldn?t live without your family and friends?! OMG ME TOO!) and your profile should be at least marginally acceptable (and hopefully won?t end up here for the wrong reasons).

LA billionaire covets sports teams to promote health

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Bio-tech entrepreneur Patrick Soon-Shiong, the richest man in Los Angeles, intends to make a bid for sports and real estate firm Anschutz Entertainment Group and wants to bring a National Football League team back to the second most populous U.S. city.

The 60-year-old sports fan, a surgeon who started and sold two pharmaceutical companies for a combined $8.6 billion, told Reuters in an interview this week that he wants to use Anschutz concert tours and sports events, and his NFL team's players, to encourage L.A. school children to adopt healthier lifestyles.

"The NFL can do so much for this city," said Soon-Shiong in an interview at his west Los Angeles office. "Kids really rally around sports and entertainment and it could be a major catalyst to demonstrate what you can do in life by living better."

Soon-Shiong grew up in South Africa, where he became a doctor in his early 20s and treated tuberculosis victims. After moving to the United States and becoming a surgeon at UCLA, he developed innovative methods to treat diabetes and cancer patients.

The sale of his two companies for $8.6 billion made him the wealthiest person in Los Angeles, according to Forbes magazine, although he still is not a household name in the city.

Under his plan, players would serve as mentors, encouraging students to eat better and exercise more. The most sophisticated methods used to deal with sports injuries could be shared with local doctors.

"It's important to motivate students in middle and high school. That's when you can help reduce diabetes and obesity that cause illness," he said. "Maybe we can turn that illness to wellness."

If he's successful in L.A., Soon-Shiong said he intends to make it a national program.

FORMING INVESTMENT TEAM

Sources say the billionaire is assembling a group of other Los Angeles business and civic leaders to buy AEG. Soon-Shiong did not discuss details of his bid.

Sources also said his buyer group includes private equity firm Guggenheim Partners, which this spring led a group that bought the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team for $2 billion.

AEG, which is owned by Denver billionaire Phil Anschutz, said on September 19 it had hired Blackstone Advisory Partners to sell the company. It is expected to fetch $6 billion to $8 billion, according to investment bankers with knowledge of its assets.

Separately, Los Angeles for years has wanted to bring back a professional football team, and Soon-Shiong acknowledged that he has met with the NFL to lay out his plan to buy a team.

AEG owns the Los Angeles Kings pro hockey franchise, the L.A. Galaxy soccer club and a 20 percent stake in the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team. It owns or operates sports and entertainment arenas worldwide, including the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and promotes concerts and other live action events.

Soon-Shiong's family foundation has committed $1 billion to transform healthcare and intends to create a national health superhighway by which doctors can share biotech information and other data to improve diagnosis and care.

His foundation gave $135 million to the Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica and $100 million to reopen Martin Luther King Hospital, which serves lower income patients in south Los Angeles.

A basketball fan who played in pickup games until tearing his Achilles tendon three years ago, Soon-Shiong owns a 5 percent stake in the Lakers, and he said he has become friends with superstar Kobe Bryant and other players, whom he sees as role models for young fans.

In March, he and his actress wife, Michelle Chan, endowed the Chan Soon-Shiong Center for Sports Science at Saint John's, which will focus on sports medicine, physical therapy and stem cell research to help heal injuries.

It works with sports medicine doctors, including the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic that treats the Kings, Lakers and L.A. Dodgers.

Saint John's announced the sports science center at a dinner honoring AEG president Tim Leiweke in March, six months before Soon-Shiong showed his interest in the conglomerate.

Google adds CardDAV support to Contacts for easier syncing with iOS

The marvelous folks from Mountain View never seem to take a break from working on tools to help make almost everyone's life easier -- even if some of these folks happen to be on the other side. Today, Google announced it was adding CardDAV to the list of open protocols it currently supports to access Gmail and Calendar from mobile apps and devices alike, noting that with the recent adaptation it'll be easier for third-party clients -- such as iOS -- to access and sync with Google Contacts. Better yet, the company posted a full set of instructions on how users can do just that, which you will find at the source link below.

Soldiers file sexual abuse lawsuit in San Francisco against Leon Panetta, other top military brass

SAN FRANCISCO -- Nineteen former and current U.S. soldiers and airmen filed suit Friday in San Francisco, claiming top military brass deprived them of constitutional rights by failing to go after their sexual predators.

"The pattern is the same in all of them: The victim is blamed, ostracized, retaliated against. Rape kits are lost, evidence is lost, there is no court martial," attorney Susan Burke said in an interview.

Burke, an attorney in Washington, D.C., who is trying to reform how the Pentagon deals with sexual assault, has three other lawsuits pending against Pentagon leaders in various courts across the country. Another is on appeal. She was a key figure in a documentary about the topic, "The Invisible

War."

Burke filed suit in U.S. District Court in San Francisco on Friday, alleging that current Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, his two predecessors and the current secretaries of the Air Force and Army violated the due process rights of five men and 14 women.

In two cases, male soldiers allege that a superior officer invited them to his home, raped them and infected them with HIV. Several of the women plaintiffs tell of being forced to live near, drill with and even undergo group therapy with the men they had accused of rape.

Burke said she filed the lawsuit in San Francisco because one of the soldiers who did not attend the news conference lives there. Burke was joined at a Friday news conference by advocacy groups and

Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Francisco, who is sponsoring legislation to create an impartial office to review rape and sexual assault allegations in the military.

"We must ask the question, 'Why are victims afraid to report?'" Speier said. "And the answer is quite clear: If you report, within a short period of time, you are more than likely labeled as having a personality disorder; you are discharged involuntarily from the military. For those who want a career in the military, that's the last thing you are going to do."

Burke said it would take Congress to reform the most fundamental problem, which is that any perpetrator's chain of command gets to nip any possible punishment or prosecution in the bud. Although Panetta has begun some reforms, such as pushing the decision on whether to prosecute up the chain of command, it's not enough, she said.

"There is no impartiality," she said. "You cannot have a gatekeeper on the administration of justice."

The Department of Defense said in its annual sexual assault report that it received reports of 3,393 victims of sexual assault in fiscal 2011. But a DOD survey the year before indicated there may be as many as 15,000 more assaults each year that are never reported. Factoring in the unreported assaults, only 6 percent of perpetrators ever spend a day in jail, the DOD report for 2011 said.

Besides Panetta, the defendants in the case are former Defense Secretaries Robert Gates and Donald Rumsfeld as well as Air Force Secretary Michael Donley and Army Secretary John McHugh.

Burke praised the men and women who brought the new lawsuit. She was joined at the news conference by plaintiffs Daniele Hoffman, from Indiana, and Kole Welsh, from Washington state.

Hoffman said she was sexually assaulted by man who recruited her into the Army National Guard when she was 17. Harassment led to inappropriate touching. In September 2003, the recruiter tried to rape her.

Though Hoffman, now 27, reported her recruiter, and her testimony resulted in a civilian trial that put him in prison, she says she was victimized by the military, isolated and verbally abused. She says she continued to endure sexual harassment after she was deployed to Iraq.

"The treatment I endured made me hate myself," she said, "so much that I attempted suicide three times."

Hoffman's decision to join Burke's lawsuit resulted from a paper she wrote for her honors rhetoric class entitled, "Silence Me No More."

"My teacher read it and he told me I had something to say," she said. "It changed things ... I'm making it, and I'm graduating nursing school in the honors program. But it's a daily struggle. I don't want anybody to have this experience I'm going through."

After five years in the Army, Welsh earned a scholarship to an ROTC training program at Ft. Lewis, since renamed Joint Base Lewis-McChord. It was there in 2007 that he was sexually assaulted by his staff sergeant supervisor, according to the lawsuit. A couple of weeks later, Welsh learned he had tested positive for HIV. The source of transmission was traced back to his supervisor, the lawsuit states.

"He felt like he had a free pass, and he could do whatever the hell he wanted to," said Welsh, who was discharged shortly after contracting the virus. Welsh said he complained to his superiors about his supervisor but his warnings went unheeded. It wasn't until two years later that the staff sergeant was sent to prison by a civilian court. Welsh blames the federal judiciary for not allowing service members "to sue the military and hold it accountable."

"Other victims I've met are so ashamed and devastated by the fact that they have been given HIV, they remain in the shadows," Welsh said. "The treatment of rape victims in the military is so humiliating, so stigmatizing, many would rather die (than come forward)."

Christopher Meloni Picks Up Safe Haven in the Suburbs - Celebrity ...

Thursday, September 27, 2012, by Sarah Firshein

Every episode of Law & Order is packed with all sorts of crazy plot twists and turns, and recently the real estate wheelings and dealings of the cast, both past and present, have taken a similarly tumultuous personality. As S. Epatha Merkerson calls her NYC co-op a "death trap" and Mariska Hargitay buys an entire townhouse, Christopher Meloni, AKA Elliot Stabler (or Roman Zimojic for True Blood fans), has been having such a hard time unloading one of his Manhattan homes that he's actually thrown in a "free" Porsche in attempts to sweeten the deal. And last year, the good detective took a loss on the sale of his place downtown.

Where will Meloni go to escape the mean streets of Manhattan and its brutal, take-no-prisoners real estate market? To the tony Fairfield County, apparently: according to the New York Post, he's just picked up Ridgecrest, a four-acre property in New Canaan, Conn. Built in 2006, the 8,000-square-foot home looks about as generic-new-build as it gets, with five bedrooms, a detached barn, and the brokerbabble's dubious claim that there are "extraordinary views to Manhattan"?although then again, it's sited on one of the highest elevations around. One thing's for sure: Meloni will have plenty of spare downtime in this leafy Connecticut idyll: in 2010, New Canaan had zero murders and zero rapes, and in July 2011 the town counted precisely one registered sex offender.

Simulations uncover 'flashy' secrets of merging black holes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? According to Einstein, whenever massive objects interact, they produce gravitational waves -- distortions in the very fabric of space and time -- that ripple outward across the universe at the speed of light. While astronomers have found indirect evidence of these disturbances, the waves have so far eluded direct detection. Ground-based observatories designed to find them are on the verge of achieving greater sensitivities, and many scientists think that this discovery is just a few years away.

Catching gravitational waves from some of the strongest sources -- colliding black holes with millions of times the sun's mass -- will take a little longer. These waves undulate so slowly that they won't be detectable by ground-based facilities. Instead, scientists will need much larger space-based instruments, such as the proposed Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, which was endorsed as a high-priority future project by the astronomical community.

A team that includes astrophysicists at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., is looking forward to that day by using computational models to explore the mergers of supersized black holes. Their most recent work investigates what kind of "flash" might be seen by telescopes when astronomers ultimately find gravitational signals from such an event.

Studying gravitational waves will give astrophysicists an unprecedented opportunity to witness the universe's most extreme phenomena, leading to new insights into the fundamental laws of physics, the death of stars, the birth of black holes and, perhaps, the earliest moments of the universe.

A black hole is an object so massive that nothing, not even light, can escape its gravitational grip. Most big galaxies, including our own Milky Way, contain a central black hole weighing millions of times the sun's mass, and when two galaxies collide, their monster black holes settle into a close binary system.

"The black holes orbit each other and lose orbital energy by emitting strong gravitational waves, and this causes their orbits to shrink. The black holes spiral toward each other and eventually merge," said Goddard astrophysicist John Baker.

Close to these titanic, rapidly moving masses, space and time become repeatedly flexed and warped. Just as a disturbance forms ripples on the surface of a pond, drives seismic waves through Earth, or puts the jiggle in a bowl of Jell-O, the cyclic flexing of space-time near binary black holes produces waves of distortion that race across the universe.

While gravitational waves promise to tell astronomers many things about the bodies that created them, they cannot provide one crucial piece of information -- the precise position of the source. So to really understand a merger event, researchers need an accompanying electromagnetic signal -- a flash of light, ranging from radio waves to X-rays -- that will allow telescopes to pinpoint the merger's host galaxy.

Understanding the electromagnetic counterparts that may accompany a merger involves the daunting task of tracking the complex interactions between the black holes, which can be moving at more than half the speed of light in the last few orbits, and the disks of hot, magnetized gas that surround them. Since 2010, numerous studies using simplifying assumptions have found that mergers could produce a burst of light, but no one knew how commonly this occurred or whether the emission would be strong enough to be detectable from Earth.

To explore the problem in greater detail, a team led by Bruno Giacomazzo at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and including Baker developed computer simulations that for the first time show what happens in the magnetized gas (also called a plasma) in the last stages of a black hole merger. Their study was published in the June 10 edition of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The simulations follow the complex electrical and magnetic interactions in the ionized gas -- known as magnetohydrodynamics -- within the extreme gravitational environment determined by the equations of Einstein's general relativity, a task requiring the use of advanced numerical codes and fast supercomputers.

Both of the simulations reported in the study were run on the Pleiades supercomputer at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. They follow the black holes over their last three orbits and subsequent merger using models both with and without a magnetic field in the gas disk.

Additional simulations were run on the Ranger and Discover supercomputers, respectively located at the University of Texas, Austin, and the NASA Center for Climate Simulations at Goddard, in order to investigate the effects of different initial conditions, fewer orbits and other variations.

"What's striking in the magnetic simulation is that the disk's initial magnetic field is rapidly intensified by about 100 times, and the merged black hole is surrounded by a hotter, denser, thinner accretion disk than in the unmagnetized case," Giacomazzo explained.

In the turbulent environment near the merging black holes, the magnetic field intensifies as it becomes twisted and compressed. The team suggests that running the simulation for additional orbits would result in even greater amplification.

The most interesting outcome of the magnetic simulation is the development of a funnel-like structure -- a cleared-out zone that extends up out of the accretion disk near the merged black hole. "This is exactly the type of structure needed to drive the particle jets we see from the centers of black-hole-powered active galaxies," Giacomazzo said.

The most important aspect of the study is the brightness of the merger's flash. The team finds that the magnetic model produces beamed emission that is some 10,000 times brighter than those seen in previous studies, which took the simplifying step of ignoring plasma effects in the merging disks.

"We need gravitational waves to confirm that a black hole merger has occurred, but if we can understand the electromagnetic signatures from mergers well enough, perhaps we can search for candidate events even before we have a space-based gravitational wave observatory," Baker said.

Did you honestly think Eric Schmidt went all the way to Seoul just to launch the Nexus 7 for South Korea, hang out with Samsung's JK Shin and moan about the patent war with Apple? Of course not. The Google chairman also found some time to learn the legendary "invisible horse" dance with PSY, the charismatic oppa in the Korean chart-topper Gangnam Style. While Google Korea was happy to supply a few photos, the only video we could dig up was a surprisingly short one hosted by Daum -- it's embedded right after the break.

Brian: "Man, not being the CEO of a multinational corporation sure is hard work."

Terrence: "I see you are a fellow disciple of the Carlton Banks school of dance."

Don: "Gangnam Style, 2012-2012."

Billy: "This song is really about the time I set my socks on fire. I see you still have yours. One moment."

Edgar: "Hm... I think we forgot the horse."

Richard Lai: "PSY, please Google+ me when this comes out on Dance Central."

Researchers discover what vampire squids eat: It's not what you think

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? About 100 years ago, marine biologists hauled the first vampire squid up from the depths of the sea. Since that time, perhaps a dozen scientific papers have been published on this mysterious animal, but no one has been able to figure out exactly what it eats. A new paper by MBARI Postdoctoral Fellow Henk-Jan Hoving and Senior Scientist Bruce Robison shows for the first time that, unlike its relatives the octopuses and squids, which eat live prey, the vampire squid uses two thread-like filaments to capture bits of organic debris that sink down from the ocean surface into the deep sea.

It's easy to imagine the vampire squid as a nightmarish predator. It lurks in the eternal midnight of the deep sea, has a dark red body, huge blue eyes, and a cloak-like web that stretches between its eight arms. When threatened, it turns inside out, exposing rows of wicked-looking "cirri." Even its scientific name, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, means "vampire squid from hell."

In reality, the vampire squid is a soft-bodied, passive creature, about the size, shape, and color of a football. A "living fossil," it inhabits the deep waters of all the world's ocean basins at depths where there is almost no oxygen, but also relatively few predators.

A few previous researchers have caught vampire squids in nets, hauled them up to the surface, and tried to figure out what they ate by examining the contents of their stomachs. The results were generally inconclusive. The stomachs typically contained bits and pieces of tiny, shrimp-like animals, microscopic algae, and lots of slimy goo.

In a recent article in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, Hoving and Robison show that vampire squids eat mostly "marine snow" -- a mixture of dead bodies, poop, and snot. The dead bodies are the remains of microscopic algae and animals that live in the waters farther up in the ocean, but sink down into the depths after they die. The poop consists of fecal pellets from small, shrimp-like animals such as copepods or krill. The snot is mostly debris from gelatinous animals called larvaceans, which filter and consume marine snow using mucus nets.

In addition to looking at the stomach-contents of vampire squids from museum collections, the researchers used MBARI's remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to collect live vampire squids and study their feeding habits in the laboratory. They also examined high-definition videos of vampire squids taken by MBARI's ROVs. Finally, they examined vampire squid arms and feeding filaments under optical and scanning electron microscopes.

One key to Hoving and Robison's discovery was that they used MBARI's ROVs to collect living vampire squids, and were able to keep them alive in the laboratory for months at a time. Hoving soon found that if he placed bits and pieces of microscopic animals into a tank with a vampire squid, the food particles would stick to one of the string-like filaments that the animal sometimes extends outward from its body. The vampire squid would then draw the filament through its arms, removing the particles from the filament and enveloping them in mucus. Finally, the squid would transfer the glob of mucus and particles to its mouth and consume it.

Using MBARI's video annotation and reference system (VARS), Hoving also identified every MBARI ROV dive over the last 25 years during which researchers had seen a vampire squid. He then pored over 170 of these video clips (over 23 hours of footage) to look for additional clues as to what and how the animals ate.

The videos showed that vampire squids often drift motionless in the water, extending one of their thin filaments -- up to eight times as long as the animal's body -- like a fishing line. In many cases, Hoving saw bits of marine snow sticking to the filament. He also saw vampire squids slowly pulling in their filaments and scraping off the accumulated marine snow using their arms. Other vampire squids had globs of marine snow and mucus dangling from their mouths.

Under the microscope, the researchers observed that the vampire squid's suckers were covered with cells that produce mucus, which the animal apparently uses to collect and glue together individual particles of marine snow. Their filaments are covered with tiny hairs and a dense net of sensory nerves, which makes them extremely sensitive to touch.

When looking at vampire squids' stomach contents, the researchers did not see bones or pieces of individual animals that would indicate the vampire squids had captured live prey. Instead, they saw mostly amorphous bits of broken-up organic debris. The only prey they saw that might have been eaten alive were the remains of tiny crustaceans that sometimes "hitchhike" on sinking mucus nets or clumps of the marine snow.

After considering all the evidence, Hoving and Robison conclude that, "the vampire squid's filament is likely a multifunctional organ that is deployed to detect and capture detrital matter but at the same time may detect the presence of predators and perhaps small living prey."

The organic detritus that forms the bulk of the vampire squid's diet would not seem to be particularly nutritious. However vampire squids complement their frugal diet with an extremely energy-efficient lifestyle and unique adaptations. Their bodies are neutrally buoyant, so they don't have to expend energy to stay at a particular depth. Even better, they don't have to swim to find food, but simply extend their filaments to collect food that drifts past them.

Finally, vampire squids don't have to expend much energy avoiding predators, because they live at depths where there is so little oxygen that few other animals can survive. Conveniently, these deep, low-oxygen zones are often found where there is an abundance of life near the sea surface, which in turn creates lots of marine snow for vampire squids to eat. Hoving explains, "Because of its unique adaptations, the vampire squid is able to permanently and successfully inhabit the center of the oxygen minimum zone, an otherwise hostile environment where the vampire squid's predators are few, and its food is abundant."

Even though Hoving and Robison's research shows that the vampire squid is a "detritivore" rather than an active predator, its sinister appearance and stealthy habits will no doubt continue to fascinate both researchers and the general public.

This research was sponsored by grants from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).

RIM Employee?s OOO Reply This Week Is Both Epic And Inspiring

blackberry_jam_america_2012-e1348599790388RIM is holding its yearly developers conference this week, playing host to over a thousand developers still dedicated to the BlackBerry platform. The company detailed several novel features to BlackBerry 10 scheduled for release in early 2013. And yes, there was this bad music video, too. Anyway, a fellow TC editor strangely posted a RIM employee's OOO reply earlier tonight. He called it both epic and sad. He stated it was delusional, yet awesome. He then laid into this random employee for having a positive outlook and faith in his struggling employer. This RIM employee deserves better. Much better. He (or she) deserves a pat on the back for sticking to the mission in spite of all the mud that's been flung. Sure, the OOO reply was a bit over the top, but that's what it's going to take to save RIM. And RIM is worth saving.

Mexican report describes out of control, self-governed prisons

A report by Mexico's human rights commission said Mexico's prisons are plagued by overcrowding, lack of guards, and the omnipotence of prison gangs and drug cartels.

Six out of 10 Mexican prisons are "self-governed" by prison gangs or drug cartels, according to a report issued Monday by the country's human rights commission.

Commission representative?Andres Aguirre?said at a news conference that?Mexico's prisons also are plagued by overcrowding, a shortage of guards and corrupt employees who sometimes help with breakouts.

Aguirre said 60 percent of the country's 430 prisons or jails are controlled by criminal elements.

He added that the escape of 521 inmates over 14 incidents since 2010 - often with the help of corrupt prison officials - constitutes a grave problem for the country.

Earlier this month, more than 130 inmates escaped from a prison near the U.S. border in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, one of numerous mass breakouts tied to organized crime in the past few years.

Initial reports indicated the Piedras Negras inmates escaped through a 23-foot-long (2.9 meters) underground tunnel, but it was later revealed that they had merely walked out the facility's front door with the help of prison guards.

"A good number of (Mexico's) prisons feature similar conditions to those at Piedras Negras," Aguirre said.

Overcrowding of the country's prisons and jails is another problem facing the national penal system.

As of July,?Mexico's overall prison population stood at 48,872 inmates, or 25 percent above the system's official capacity.

Mexico?also faces a shortage of prison guards relative to international norms, Aguirre said.

The commission's findings are a reminder of the challenges that await?Enrique Pena Nieto,?Mexico's incoming president, who has pledged to reduce crime in the country after six years of increased gang-related violence under President?Felipe Calderon.

B2B Social Media Marketing & Community Building Insights from ...

Determining why your company should engage in a social media plan is one of the first and most important steps.? Working towards the ?what? without the ?why? can result in wasted time, money and set a B2B marketing program off track.

Next up in our B2B marketing innovation interview series is Mack Collier, a well known and respected social media strategist and trainer specializing in helping companies better connect with their customers via social media.?Mack is also the force behind #BlogChat, the largest organized chat on Twitter.

In this interview, Mack dives into four things brands can do to cultivate and connect with fans, as well as well as three basic questions every marketer should ask themselves before embarking on a social media marketing program. He also offers sage advice on B2B innovation and tools.

Please tell us about you and the kind of B2B marketing work you?re most excited about.? Solve any tough ones lately?

The thing that really excites me about blogging, social media, content marketing, etc. is that I think we are getting back to the idea of creating marketing communications that can also create value for our customers. ?I think we are getting away from the days when you ?win? the sale by simply banging customers over the head with your commercial 15 times, to creating content that also creates value, which helps build connections as well as your expertise.

What are the essential starting points small businesses should consider when employing social media marketing and blogging in the B2B space?

I think the most important starting point for a small business or ANY business using social media or starting a blog is to answer this question: ?We are using social media because we want to ________.?

Too many businesses start using social media without asking themselves WHY they want to start using social media. ?(Hint: ?Cause everyone else is? is NOT an acceptable answer) ?Once your business can fill in that blank, then you can craft a social media strategy that actually helps you reach that goal.

There?s a common association that it?s tough to come up with new B2B marketing ideas, but as you know, innovation exists within B2B as much or more as it does with consumer marketing ? just in different ways.? What?s your process for coming up with new and innovative ideas for your B2B marketing efforts?

It?s tough for most businesses to come up with ANY new marketing ideas. ?But I think that?s often the case because businesses view their new marketing effort as ?How is this going to help us stand out?? vs ?How is this going to help us create value for our customers?? ?I think the growing trend of embracing content marketing is really helping businesses to review the idea of creating value via marketing, which I think is awesome.

An essential part of building a business online is to attract and engage a community.? What are your most practical tips that companies and brands should consider for connecting with and cultivating fans?

There are four things that brands can do to cultivate and connect with their fans:

  1. Be a part of the audience they want to connect with. ?Look at the world through the eyes of your customers. ?How does Harley Davidson do market research? ?By jumping on their Harleys and going for a ride on the weekend with their customers. ?The brands that do the best job of connecting with their fans look at their world the eyes of their most passionate customers.
  2. Embrace your fans. ?The biggest mistake most brands make when it comes to their fans is that they leave them alone. ?Your fans are special people that WANT a deeper connection with your brand. ?Reward that desire and look for ways to build a deeper connection with them.
  3. Focus on the ?Bigger Idea? behind your brand. ?Don?t focus on your product or service, focus on what your customers do with your product. ?For example, in its content Patagonia focuses on issues that are relevant to its customers, such as sustainability, protecting the environment, and being active outdoors. ?This approach makes its products more relevant to its customers.
  4. Look for ways to shift control to your fans. ?If you want to make your marketing more relevant to your customers, make sure it is spoken in a voice that they can understand and relate to; Their own. ?I?m not talking about simply crowdsourcing your marketing, but understanding your customers, and giving them input into the direction of your brand. ?Remember that your fans WANT to be heard by your brand. ?They want to know you are listening, and if you show them you are, that only validates their love of your brand.

Developing a solid B2B marketing plan takes research, and understanding of the customer goals, pain points and journey.? What are some of the most common myths or mistakes you?ve seen with B2B marketing planning?? Any tips on how to be more successful??

One of the great things about the rise of social media and digital communications tools is that it makes it far easier for engaged businesses to better learn about and understand its customers. ?There?s an exponential increase in content being created by?well everyone, and that content can be distilled down into valuable customer insights for the businesses that are willing to put in the legwork.

I think one of the biggest mistakes B2B companies can make is to form a picture of who their customers are based on outdated or incomplete information. ?Leverage these new social tools as a way to better understand and segment your customers to improve your marketing efforts and make them more effective and efficient.

With all the hype in the business marketing media, it?s tempting for companies to chase trending B2B marketing tactics like visual marketing or social networking.? How do you decide what the right B2B marketing tactical mix is for companies that you work with?

I think all companies really need to focus on their available resources and do NOT fall for the ?shiny object syndrome? and start using whatever the ?hot? social media tool or site of the month is. ?I think it goes back to asking and answering three basic questions:

  1. Who are we trying to reach?
  2. What are we trying to accomplish?
  3. What are our resources?

Let your goals define the tools you will use, not the other way around.

Companies that are in search of business growth with limited resources can often close part of the gap with tools.? What tools do you recommend for B2B marketers (or marketers in general) to get more out of their online content and social media investments?

Well I hate to give advice on which tool is best because I think that your goals/resources/audience defines the tools for you. ?But, when it comes to social media, I think right now there are two main tools to look at for B2Bs:

  1. Blogs. ?I will always love blogs because with a blog you control the content platform. ?That?s huge, and it allows you to create content that search engines love.
  2. LinkedIn. ?It?s simply more business-oriented, and there?s a higher probability that you can find key decision-makers and cultivate a relationship with them.

Now in general, it?s impossible to ignore Facebook simply because it?s userbase is so massive. ?If you are a business operating in the tech sector, it might be worthwhile to investigate Google Plus as well.

Please share your advice for other B2B marketers out there on how they can be more innovative.

In general, I think we all tend to overthink marketing. ?I think it all goes back to understanding who we are trying to connect with and how we can create communications that are valuable for them. ?For B2C brands, that might be less about the product and more about how customers will use the product and what they will do with it. ?For B2Bs, the idea is the same, its more about how another business will use your product or service to more effectively and efficiently run its business. ?I think a good starting point is to ask yourself ?What business problem does our product or service help solve?? ?Create marketing that focuses on the direct benefit for businesses.

Thank you for your insights Mack!

If you?re looking for even more insight on making your business more innovative, be sure to attend a recap of the first day of the conference on #BlogChat on October 4th.? Businessman Sentenced to 11 Years for Real Estate Investment Scam

Francis X. Sanchez, 52, Woodstock, Illinois, was sentenced in federal court by U.S. District Judge Philip G. Reinhard to 136 months in prison for conducting a $7 million fraud scheme.

The defendant co-owned and operated a business in McHenry County known as InvestForClosures. On May 3, 2012, Sanchez pled guilty and admitted that he had fraudulently obtained more than $7 million from InvestForClosures? investors.

According to Sanchez?s plea agreement, InvestForClosures purportedly bought distressed houses, rehabilitated those houses, and sold the houses for a profit. Sanchez admitted in his plea agreement that he solicited people to invest in InvestForClosures by making various misrepresentations, including: (1) their investments would be safe because they would be backed by real estate; (2) InvestForClosures used the majority of their investors? funds to purchase real estate; and (3) because of the business? efficient cash flow from buying and selling houses, InvestForClosures had never failed to make an interest payment on time or return an investor?s principal when requested.

These representations were false because: (1) the business did not own sufficient real estate to secure all of the investments; (2) the business did not use the majority of investor funds to purchase real estate, but instead used most of the investors? funds to pay other expenses, including the salaries of the defendants, and to pay Ponzi-type interest to prior investors; and (3) InvestForClosures was not making enough money from property sales to pay the interest owed to the investors, but was instead using cash received from new investors to pay the prior investors with Ponzi-type payments.

Sanchez further admitted that, in order to conceal from the investors his false promises and misrepresentations and to prevent the investors from demanding the return of their principal, he told the investors that he was developing an exclusive, luxury residential community in Mexico known as the ?Sands of Gold.? Sanchez solicited his investors to purchase lots at Sands of Gold and to invest additional monies for the Sands of Gold project.

Sanchez admitted that he made several misrepresentations to his investors regarding Sands of Gold, including: (1) the government of Mexico had promised to invest millions of dollars in infrastructure necessary for the development of the Sands of Gold; (2) efforts to obtain financing for the project were going well and a financing deal was imminent; (3) he was finishing negotiations with a major hotel chain for the construction of a hotel at Sands of Gold; and (4) a major accounting firm had agreed to do the accounting work necessary so that the business could go public.

During the course of the scheme, Sanchez fraudulently obtained more than $9 million from the investors. Of this amount, approximately $1,711,711.18 was paid back to the investors through Ponzi-type payments. In addition to sentencing Sanchez to prison, the court also ordered him to pay more than $7.8 million in restitution to the victims of his crime.

Sanchez?s business partner and co-defendant, James D. Bourassa, 55, Gilberts, Illinois, pled guilty to mail fraud on February 27, 2012. Bourassa was sentenced on June 11, 2012, to 51 months in federal prison.

The case was investigated by the Rockford Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Chicago Office of the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Illinois Secretary of State?s Securities Department. The investigation was conducted under the auspices of the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force, which includes representatives from a broad range of federal agencies, regulatory authorities, inspectors general, and state and local law enforcement who, working together, bring to bear a powerful array of criminal and civil enforcement resources. The task force is working to improve efforts across the federal executive branch, and with state and local partners, to investigate and prosecute significant financial crimes, ensure just and effective punishment for those who perpetrate financial crimes, combat discrimination in the lending and financial markets, and recover proceeds for victims of financial crimes. For more information on the task force, visit: www.StopFraud.gov

The sentencing was announced by Gary S. Shapiro, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; William C. Monroe, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of Federal Bureau of Investigation; Thomas P. Brady, Postal Inspector in Charge of the Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service; and Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White.

The government was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott A. Verseman.

U.S. says complied with WTO ruling on Boeing subsidies

GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States said on Monday it had complied with a ruling ordering it to withdraw unfair subsidies to Boeing as tit-for-tat exchanges flared up in the world's largest trade dispute.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) found in March that the U.S. planemaker had received billions of dollars in unfair aid, following an earlier ruling against European support to Airbus.

The United States and the European Union (EU) cannot agree on the severity of the ruling against subsidies to Airbus, which the United States says far outstrip any U.S. government support for Boeing .

The U.S. Trade Representative's office said it had met a September 23 deadline to comply with the WTO's findings in a case brought by the European Union in response to the first claim launched by the United States more than seven years ago.

"USTR has been working extensively over the last six months with all of the government entities affected by the March 23, 2012 ruling in this case - including NASA, the Department of Defense, the State of Washington, and the City of Wichita - to ensure full compliance with the United States' WTO obligations," the government agency said in a statement.

The EU's executive Commission, in response, said it needed to check that the U.S. had taken the necessary action to end the subsidies.

"In March this year, the WTO ruled that billions of dollars of subsidies to Boeing were illegal, and the U.S. were given until today to bring those to an end. We will now immediately review their compliance package to check whether the U.S. have taken the necessary steps to end these subsidies and their adverse effects," EU Trade spokesperson John Clancy said in a statement.

The United States has targeted government loans to Airbus, which it says helped the European planemaker compete unfairly to replace Boeing as the world's largest commercial jetmaker.

The European Union says Boeing is unfairly assisted by government research deals and other federal and local measures.

Both sides now claim to have complied with the respective WTO rulings, while the United States has accused the EU of failing to fall into step with the WTO decisions and is threatening up to $10 billion in sanctions.

Boeing said Airbus and its government backers had "thumbed their noses" at the WTO. Airbus is owned by EADS , in which the French government has a stake and the German government has influence via a stake held by Daimler .

"Despite a crystal clear ruling against launch aid subsidies, European governments have continued the practice by providing Airbus with billions of taxpayer euros and pounds for its next new product, the A350," Boeing said in a statement.

"What is more, the European governments have yet to remove the very substantial subsidies, including those propping up the A380, which the WTO's ruling in June of last year requires them to do."

After a legal battle that dates back seven years, most observers expect the United States and the European Union will eventually negotiate a settlement to end the row, but warn it could rumble on for years more amid further bickering.

EADS, is now in merger talks with British arms maker BAE Systems Plc , a tie-up that would create the world's largest integrated defense and commercial aviation company, with estimated sales of $92.4 billion, surpassing Boeing's by more than a third, based on 2011 figures.

Money in politics: Big oil's ties to Washington

A report from the National Wildlife Federation?highlights the role it says oil companies play in U.S. politics, stating energy companies are influencing legislation in favour of oil, natural gas and coal policies, according to OilPrice.com

By Daniel J. Graeber,?Guest blogger / September 24, 2012

Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, meets with reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington in this September 2012 file photo. Boehner received nearly twice as much financial support from donors tied to the energy sector than did the next-closest recipient, according to the National Wildlife Federation.

John Boehner, speaker of the House of Representatives, received nearly twice as much financial support from donors tied to the energy sector than did the next-closest recipient, a report from the National Wildlife Federation finds. The 20-page report highlights the role it says oil companies play in U.S. politics, stating energy companies are working behind the scenes on Capitol Hill to influence legislation in favour of oil, natural gas and coal policies. The NWF report finds that the current 112th U.S. Congress has voted one out of every five times against legislation drafted in favour of environmental issues.

Boehner, R-Ohio, in a press conference this week, spoke out against a stagnant unemployment climate in the United States. The U.S. Labour Department, in an early September report,?showed?the unemployment rate dropped slightly in August to 8.1 percent, down 0.2 percent from its July level. That's the 43rd consecutive month, however, that the unemployment rate was above 8 percent, the longest period since World War II. The House speaker said this was a sign of President Barack Obama's failure to lead.
?
On Friday, Boehner led the House of Representatives in?passing?the so-called Stop the War on Coal Act, a measure that would block the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gases. It's unlikely to pass through the Senate.
?
"We?re the Saudi Arabia of coal and the president wants to shut down coal production and the use of coal in the United States so that we can export it to our economic competitors around the world,"?said?Boehner in a statement. It's a jobs issue, he said.?(More from Oilprice.com:?Ignore the Political Optimism, the Planet is in Trouble)

The?report?from the NWF, released on the eve of the House vote, finds that Oxbow Corp., a private company focused on mining and marketing of coal, natural gas and petroleum, donated more than $80,000 to Boehner's campaign since 2010. The NWF explains that Oxbow was founded by William Koch, whose twin billionaire brothers are among the largest corporate financiers of the U.S. Congress. According to information NWF gathered from The Center for Responsive Politics, energy companies like Oxbow gave more than $814,000 to Boehner's campaign during the current Congress.

The NWF's report, however, is non-partisan in its effort to showcase the energy sector's monetary influence over U.S. politics. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who serves on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, ranked No. 2 on the NWF's list. Manchin, ahead of Friday's vote in the House,?said?it was clear that "the EPA has overstepped its bounds" in terms of action that could target the coal industry. Of the top 10 lawmakers listed in the NWF report, however, Manchin is the only Democrat and received $480,050 compared to Boehner's $814,060.?(More from Oilprice.com:?Japan Steps Away from Nuclear Power)

?
The NWF states that the House of Representatives, led by Boenher and his fellow Republicans, voted 109 times since the start of 2011 to weaken environmental laws or some of the safety regulations in the oil industry.?
?
Larry Schweiger, president and CEO of the NWF, said the report provides a "behind the curtains" look into U.S. politics.
?
"America has been losing ground in the climate fight, and much of this is due to gridlock within our political system," he?writes. "The resulting inertia is sustained by oil, gas, and coal companies that have spent more than a billion dollars on campaign contributions, public advertising, and lobbying in the past two years alone."
