PBT: Diverging views of what MLS win means

CHESTER, Pa. ??From the Major League Soccer side, All-Star games are about holding serve.

If the home team wins, everybody rightly points out that Chelsea is just days into a months-long adventure, hardly fit and just looking not to pull a darn hammy. All vagaries of motivation fall squarely on MLS side. ?So when Chelsea loses, we all just shrug and order another beer.

Truly, no one believes that a collection of a few good and a few great MLS men can conspire to cook up a better soccer soup than Chelsea. As some people put it sarcastically on Twitter, Wednesday?s 3-2 win outside Philadelphia ?means MLS is better than Barcelona, right??

On the other hand, if Chelsea ? or some other European heavyweight that becomes All-Star opposition du jour ? prevails, then everyone makes it a referendum on league quality, an alleged demonstration of confounded MLS inferiority.

So, as long as Ben Olsen?s team didn?t get run out of PPL Park (as the All-Stars did over the last two years), we?re not assigning much significance one way or the other. We just smile at a nice, 3-2 match and then commence to arguing about EPL and MLS and making better milkshakes or whatever.

But if we spin the ball around and look at it from another side, a win for the MLS All-Stars is really something of a shocker. Consider the rosters:

For Chelsea, 9 of 11 starters are full internationals who play regularly for their countries. Six more off the bench can be considered current internationals.

For Major League Soccer? Just two.

Even if you count David Beckham and Thierry Henry ? and we probably should, since they are former internationals who have reached a certain age, but ones who represented the gold standard when they were on top of the world ? you only arrive at the number four.

The Tangled Mess of EV Chargers

This spring PM got to drive the Mitsubishi i, the company?s tiny, futuristic EV offering. As we?d learned from driving a Nissan Leaf, it?s not easy to get used to managing the limited range of an electric car. But we had a leg up on being responsible EV owners?a 240-volt Level 2 charger we?d installed while driving the Leaf.

Or so we thought. Although our charger fit onto the Mistubishi, it wouldn?t charge the car. Similarly, when we tried to charge the i on a public charger in Michigan, no juice flowed forth.

Such is the state of EV charging. While the charger you buy through the dealer at the time of purchase will definitely work, there?s no guarantee that you?ll get a true connection just because a cord plugs into the car?even though there?s supposed to be. "There are a fair number of problems out there," says Richard Lowenthal, chief technical officer and founder of Coulomb Technologies, which operates the ChargePoint public charging network.

The problem, according to Lowenthal, is that carmakers focused on ensuring that their cars would work with their chargers, without a lot of consideration of public charging stations. "Automakers didn?t go through that realization until recently," he says. To aid in the compatibility process, Coulomb offers carmakers testing of their cars for compatibility. "Usually we find a problem," Lowenthal says.

EVs come with a 120-volt Level 1 charger that you can plug into pretty much any outlet. But this works in slow motion. To own an electric car, you need to set up a 240-volt Level 2 charger that gets the job done in decent time. This is the kind that you?d find in a public charging station. But it?s what gave us the trouble.

Joe Delello, Mitsubishi Motors North America?s director of franchise development, said that this problem should not have occurred, because the company that manufactured our Nissan charger, AeroVironment, is one of Mitsubishi?s approved companies. The i is also tested to work with Eaton chargers sold at Best Buy, he says. "We?re taking very expensive measures to ensure [charging failure] doesn?t happen."

Another reason it shouldn?t happen: Things are supposed to be standardized. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)?the same SAE whose specification you see on a quart of oil?set a standard called J1772 to specify both the physical dimensions of the plug and the electrical characteristics of the current passing through it. In the interest of charger compatibility, all the new EVs sold in the U.S. comply with the J1772 standard.

But, it turns out, some engineers have interpreted the guidelines differently than others. Britta Gross, General Motors? director of global energy systems and infrastructure commercialization, says that this is an unavoidable issue in a nascent industry. "There is no replacement for experience," she says. "There is always an evolutionary aspect to standards, to tighten it up so the problems go away."

Manoj Karwa, director of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) programs for electrical-component manufacturer Leviton, says the situation will get better, and probably because of consolidation. Currently there are 35 EVSE vendors. "Each one has interpreted the recommended package differently," he said. "We have found some significant differences [among J1772-compliant chargers]." Karwa predicts that a handful of big companies will emerge in the future, easing these problems.

For the moment, though, EV drivers might run into multiple setbacks while trying to recharge their cars. Most commonly, Lownthal says, the charger mistakenly identifies a ground fault in the vehicle and, assumes there is a short, and refuses to charge the car. Or the pilot signal (which is the EV equivalent of old dial-up modems squawking at one another until they negotiated a communication speed) fails in its job of letting the charger and the car decide how quickly to charge the battery.

Despite these difficulties, Karwa says that in 95 percent of cases where the driver has a problem with the charger, it will charge the car eventually. For instance, ChargePoint?s public chargers have a toll-free phone number printed on them; call it and the operator can manually override the charger and command it to charge your car. In most cases of incompatibility, Lowenthal says, you lose some of the intended functions of the charger, such as remote control or delayed charging, but it will still do its main job and charge the car.

If you?re thinking about buying an EV, Karwa has two recommendations. First, always use a charger that is endorsed by the car?s manufacturer. Second, look for approval by Underwriters Laboratories, a global safety firm that checks the quality of such things.

Just don?t expect the industry to reach consensus overnight?in part because the players haven?t completely sorted out what EV chargers can do. "Where could this go?" Gross says. "Are we ready for the smart grid? What information could be communicated?" In the future, quick chargers could let connected cars? batteries discharge into the power grid to power residential air conditioning during peak afternoon hours. Or, consumers waiting for their cars to charge could also enjoy video streamed through an Internet connection in the charger. For now, automakers and EV servicing companies are building flexibility into plug standards to allow for that evolution over time, Gross says. In the short term, however, it just means confusion will reign.

Another example: The next thing that could help EVs become more practical is DC fast charging, the next step up from Level 2 chargers. But there are three competing standards for fast charging. One system is Tesla?s proprietary design, which probably won?t become widespread. The others are a Japanese design already used by Nissan and Mitsubishi, and an extension to the SAE J1772 standard that won?t hit the market for a couple of years at the earliest. "I don?t know if you can call it a standard if there are three of them," Lowethal says.

The result? We?ll have dueling VHS versus Beta quick-charging standards that will require having duplicate, incompatible public charging stations. "It will be a lot like gasoline and diesel pumps," Lowenthal says.

It is currently 100 years from that memorable night in April 1912 when the allegedly ?unsinkable? Titanic sank inside one or two hours of colliding with an iceberg. Having reached the tiny port of Cobh in Southern Ireland where the last few passengers embarked, the mighty ship steamed out of the calm waters to commence its ill-starred journey to N. America. There wasn't any sense of foreboding; no fear and no fear of what was to come. All appeared to be going well as the horns of the tiny vessels which accompanied the Titanic sounded just before she reached the open ocean and she began to carve her way proudly through the waves of the Atlantic. ?It?s nice you came out tonight to support spaying and neutering your animals,? Kid Kazooey front man Kevin MacDowell said to the audience. ?Maybe we should do that to humans, too.?

?Birth control,? a woman in the audience yelled above the clatter of children and bar patrons.

?This next song is called ?Population Control,?? MacDowell responded.
Kid Kazooey was one of three bands to perform at Woofstock ? A Benefit Concert for Pets Alive Spay/Neuter Clinic. Other performances featured Colonel Angus and Hudson Hornet.

Although the event was intended to raise funds for Pets Alive, a local nonprofit, event coordinator and Pets Alive volunteer Jen Orman said the event was also intended to raise awareness. The event brought in $716.75.

The overall mission of Pets Alive is to end pet overpopulation and euthanasia in south central Indiana. Spaying and neutering pets reduces the number of unwanted litters in the community and reduces the burden on local shelters that often rely on tax dollars.

?We live in a part of the country where there is still euthanasia of healthy animals, animals that are being euthanized simply because there is nowhere else for them to go,? Orman said. ?That?s senseless killing, and I?m an animal lover, so I want that to stop.?

Since its opening in 2005, Pets Alive has spayed and neutered more than 57,000 cats and dogs. These animals include those available for adoption at Bloomington Animal Shelter. Since Orman said the clinic charges customers less than half the true cost to perform the surgeries, donations cover the remaining cost.

In his recent interview with CNBC, however, John Riccitiello, CEO of the publishing giant, said that he believes his company?s financial outlook will turn around if it can move into next-gen consoles soon. According to that logic, we should hopefully be seeing the next generation of gaming consoles sometime in 2013. Other analysts have pointed to signs, such as hints and leaked details about the PlayStation ?Orbis? and the Xbox ?720?, as indications that we can expect an announcement sometime in 2013, either at CES or at E3.

In his interview, Riccitiello mentioned the company?s greatest challenges, which include a heavy saturation of the market for the next console generation. He predicts that we?ll hear official announcements about these consoles coinciding with how those announcements will factor into their NPD data. ?I think a major catalyst coming forward and the most important catalyst coming forward is visibility on next-gen consoles because that NPD data? that can and should be reversed out at some point probably starting next year.? While this prediction isn?t the kind starting with ?I believe we?ll see the next generation of consoles in?? it makes logical sense. Financial data hasn?t been great lately, with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo seeing, in some cases, double-digit losses in their sales figures for June, leading to the big three, and major third party developers, seeing the writing on the wall for this generation of consoles.

Another indicator to the major players in the gaming industry is the massive amount raised by the Kickstarter project for Ouya, a new console being developed which will run Android, be fully open for tinkering and will cost only $99 on launch; this project should serve as a big sign that the gaming public is ready for something new.

Media Arts Center San Diego is now accepting submissions for our 4th annual Film Festival Poster Competition. The deadline for all submissions is October 5, 2012.

Media Arts Center San Diego will be celebrating ?their 20th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival (SDLFF), March 7-17, 2013 and for the 4th year in a row will hold its film festival competition. ?The San Diego Latino Film Festival (SDLFF) celebrates films and videos by Latinos and/or about the Latino experience, screening over 150 works from across Latin America and throughout the United States.

Guidelines:?The competition is open to all artists and graphic designers. All submissions must be received by the deadline of October 5, 2012 at 5:00pm. There is no limit to the number of submissions entered.?There is no cost to submit. In a closely watched case, a gay undocumented Irishman has had his deportation order suspended and his case ?administratively closed? as the Obama administration seems intent ?on taking steps to halt deportation of gays who have married.

The Immigration Appeals Court has suspended the deportation of Paul Wilson Dorman, 50, a gay undocumented Irishman originally from Newtownards, Co. Down who is living in New Jersey.?

Dorman, who has been in a long-term relationship with John Paul Frederick, Jr., 48, since 1997, was flagged for deportation when he was waiting to meet his son, who is a minor, at the airport. ?A member of ground staff became suspicious of Dorman?s immigration status and reported him to the authorities, Dorman?s attorney told the Irish Voice.

The Dorman decision was eagerly awaited by other gay married couples as a test case of whether ?the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) which does not recognize gay marriages would continue to be applied by the Obama administration. Dorman had no other grounds for appealing other than he was legally married.

Instead the administration has sent the case to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to have Dorman?s possible green card adjudicated on the basis of his New York State marriage.

Dorman?s lawyer Nicholas J. Mundy stated, ?This move represents another clear and unambiguous signal that the administration is relaxing enforcement of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and taking steps to delay and prevent the deportation of same-sex couples and the devastating discriminatory impact of DOMA."

Mr. Dorman and his same-sex spouse were previously joined in a New Jersey State civil union on June 1, 2009, and thereafter married in the State of New York on March 27, 2012. They filed a request for a relative visa petition, the first step toward obtaining lawful permanent residence, with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services on May 2, 2012.

Big Ten may give commish power to fire coaches

In the wake of the scandal at Penn State, the Big Ten Conference is considering a plan to give its commissioner the power to punish schools with financial sanctions, suspensions and even the ability to fire coaches.

An 18-page plan being circulated among Big Ten leadership raises the possibility of giving Commissioner Jim Delany such authority, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported Thursday. The plan, which the Chronicle posted online, suggests that in certain circumstances requiring "immediate and decisive action," the commissioner would have unilateral authority to "take any and all actions" in the best interest of the Big Ten.

The league declined comment when contacted by The Associated Press for comment on the plan titled "Standards and Procedures for Safeguarding Institutional Control of Intercollegiate Athletics."

"It is a working document intended to generate ideas, not draw conclusions," according to an email sent from Big Ten headquarters to people in the league. "One provision in the document addresses 'emergency authority of the commissioner' - it is just one of many ideas."

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was recently convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys, sometimes on campus. A report commissioned by Penn State said school leaders, including the late coach Joe Paterno, ignored allegations more than a decade ago to avoid bad publicity, allowing Sandusky to prey on other boys for years. Paterno's family said he never participated in an attempt to cover up wrongdoing.

The NCAA and U.S. Education Department are investigating Penn State for potential rules and policy violations; the issue of "institutional control" is believed to be a key part of the NCAA probe, since problems there can lead to athletic penalties. The Chronicle said the Big Ten is still discussing how to handle fallout from the scandal at one of its member schools; currently, its 12-member Council of Presidents and Chancellors must approve any decision to suspend or expel one of the league's schools.

Whether Delany would ever be granted the power to fire coaches or punish schools was unknown. The Big Ten email said the council would have to approve such a sweeping change.

Minnesota President Eric Kaler said he doubts that individual schools would be willing to give up control to the conference on such an issue of firing a coach. Still, Kaler said it's important for Big Ten leaders to sharpen their standards.

"The Penn State situation has highlighted again the vulnerabilities of institutions to bad behavior in their athletic departments," Kaler said in a phone interview with the AP.

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said the scandal has school presidents and ADs looking at ways to improve oversight and control.

"A lot of things have been discussed, but I have not been party to any conversation that would suggest the commissioner would have unilateral power to fire coaches," Brandon told the AP. "That's kind of out of left field, and I don't think the commissioner would want that kind of power. But what sounds reasonable to me is to create a mechanism in which the commissioner along with a committee of presidents and athletic directors had more oversight and control."

Illinois Chancellor Phyllis Wise called the Penn State scandal "unprecedented" and wasn't sure what the Big Ten will do.

"Since the document related to the issue is in draft form, I don't know what it will say when it's finalized," she said.

Illini athletic director Mike Thomas called the proposal "a work in progress."

"I don't know the exact language but I know there was some language in there related to personnel matters and consequences, should there be issues of a certain magnitude that requires action," Thomas said.

Thomas wasn't prepared to endorse the idea of coaches or other officials potentially being fired by the commissioner.

"Generally I'm supportive of a concept that might include different safeguards and controls and best practices," he said.

The idea was brought up at SEC media days, where Commissioner Mike Slive said simply: "I really make it my business not to discuss other people's issues."

Mississippi athletic director Ross Bjork said such a move would need study, saying "I don't think anyone has proposed anything like that before in college athletics."

Georgia coach Mark Richt said he didn't see a problem with giving a league commissioner such power.

"I would think the commissioner is going to do what's in the best interest of the league, in the best interest of the people involved," he said. "I would say for him to have the right to do that, for her to have the right to do that, is fine. Doesn't mean they have to, but they would have the right to do that. It's just one more check and balance in a system that certainly ? I would just say it would make sense to me."

Richard Katz, a sports agent whose clients include college coaches in the Big 12 and SEC, didn't like the idea of conference commissioner being able to fire a coach.

"It could present substantial legal and other problems with regard to the employment contracts that coaches have with the universities," said Katz, whose KMG Sports Management is based in Cincinnati.
