Golf-Relaxed Westwood mulls pasta or sushi decision

GULLANE, Scotland, July 20 | Sat Jul 20, 2013 9:36pm BST

GULLANE, Scotland, July 20 (Reuters) - Lee Westwood was focusing on his dinner rather than the pressure he will be under when he bids to end his long wait for a first major championship in the British Open final round on Sunday.

The 40-year-old Briton leads the field by two shots after getting the better of playing partner and world number one Tiger Woods in a gripping third-round showdown at Muirfield.

"Actually I'm not in a high-pressure situation because I'm going to go have dinner and I'm so good with a knife and fork now that I don't feel any pressure at all," he told a news conference after shooting a round of 70 on Saturday.

"Normally I have pasta just to recharge but I might go the Andy Murray route and have 50 pieces of sushi or something like that," he added, referring to British tennis player Murray, who won Wimbledon this month and is known to tuck into up to 50 pieces of sushi in one sitting.

Westwood said he would think about winning the Open later in the evening.

"I don't see anything wrong with that, picture yourself holding the Claret Jug at the final tee and seeing your name at the top of the leaderboard," he said.

"I didn't feel any pressure today and felt nice and calm out there and in control of what I was doing."

Westwood received massive support from the home crowds as he tries to emulate Justin Rose's U.S. Open victory and give England two successive major champions for the first time since 1909.

"I was interacting with the crowd all day," he said. "Obviously, trying to give them as much to cheer for as possible. It's great to play in an Open Championship in front of the crowds that they get here and I always get a good reception."

BIGGEST ROARS

The biggest roars of the day came at the par-five fifth hole where Westwood, sporting a tangerine shirt and pristine white trousers, sank a curling 25-foot putt for eagle and the 16th when he sank a 10-foot putt for bogey.

"That was probably the biggest momentum thing I did all day, walk off there with a bogey," he said.

The former world number one has putted very well all week, an area of his game that has long been seen as a weakness in his attempts to win majors.

"I've had lots of chances, sometimes I've played well, other times I've played not too well," he said.

"I can't remember playing that poorly. Obviously I had a chance at Turnberry in 2009 and I messed up a bit."

Westwood finished tied third at Turnberry and second at St Andrews the following year and he has also been in positions to challenge for the U.S. Masters and U.S. Open.

"I was worrying about what other people were doing and not focusing on my own game," he said. "But I have had lots of chances. I felt like I played well when I had a chance at the Masters and felt like I had a great round."

Westwood, who will play with American Hunter Mahan in the final round, believes he knows what it takes to win major.

"It's just a case of going out there tomorrow and having the confidence in my game, which I've got," he said. "And putting it to the test." (Editing by Sonia Oxley)

Police focus on cooking oil container in Indian mass poisoning case

By Annie Banerji and Mayank Bhardwaj

GANDAMAN/NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indian police suspect that India's worst outbreak of mass food poisoning in years was caused by cooking oil that had been kept in a container previously used to store pesticide, the magistrate overseeing the investigation said on Friday.

Health officials in the eastern state of Bihar were due on Friday to release autopsy results for many of the 23 schoolchildren who died on Tuesday after vomiting and convulsing with agonizing stomach cramps.

The children fell ill within minutes after eating a lunch provided by their school in the village of Gandaman. The free meals are part of a national scheme aimed at tackling malnutrition and encouraging children to attend school.

"Circumstantial evidence suggests that cooking oil was kept in a container which was previously used to store pesticides or insecticides," Abhijit Sinha, district magistrate of Saran district, said by telephone. Gandaman is in Saran district.

"At the moment we cannot say whether it was deliberate or it was pure negligence," he said, adding that police were searching for the headmistress of the school.

He said forensic tests were being conducted on the mustard oil container, uneaten food and utensils to determine the cause of the poisoning.

Reuters reporters saw police and local officials raid the headmistress's home in Gandaman on Friday while residents crowded outside.

HEADMISTRESS STILL BEING SOUGHT

One of the officials said it was the second such search of the house. In the first raid, police removed a 2-litre (68 U.S. fluid ounce) plastic container of mustard oil, a sack of rice, a bag of lentils, salt and spices. He would not say what more they were looking for on Friday.

It is not yet clear where the headmistress bought the food for the free meals, cooked at a makeshift kitchen outside the one-room ramshackle school. Police said she left the village on Tuesday with her husband, a local businessman who owned a shopping complex of about 40 stores.

At the local police station, some of the pots and pans from the school kitchen were piled in a corner.

An empty bottle of mustard oil lay on top. A local policeman, Ashok Kumar, said the headmistress had decanted oil from the 2-litre container into the bottle for daily use in the kitchen as there was no storage space at the school.

Doctors treating some two dozen children at the main hospital in Patna, the capital of Bihar, have said they suspect the children were poisoned by organophosphorous, a compound used in pesticide.

"The minute the children were brought in, we smelled this foul odor of organophosphorus," said Dr. Vinod Mishra.

The children fell ill, along with the cook, after eating a meal of rice and soybean-potato curry.

Although there have been widespread complaints of food quality in the Mid-Day Meal Scheme in India, the world's largest school feeding program, cases of mass food poisoning are rare.

In 1998, adulterated rapeseed oil killed as many as 60 people in the capital New Delhi. Investigations later revealed that the oil had been mixed with white oil, a petroleum product.

United States "not threatened" by China's surge in Africa -Obama

By Kate Kelland, Health and Science Correspondent LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is planning to become the first country in the world to offer controversial "three-parent" fertility treatments to families who want to avoid passing on incurable diseases to their children. The methods, currently only at the research stage in laboratories in Britain and the United States, would for the first time involve implanting genetically modified embryos into women, and raise serious ethical questions. ...

Obama: S. Africa shows how people can change world

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) ? President Barack Obama challenged young Africans to rise to the challenge of shoring up progress on the continent that rests on a "fragile foundation," summoning them to fulfill the legacy of South Africa's beloved former leader Nelson Mandela.

In his own effort to carve out a piece of that legacy, Obama announced a new U.S.-led initiative to double access to electric power across Africa, vowing to help bring "light where there is currently darkness."

"Nelson Mandela showed us that one man's courage can move the world," Obama said during an evening speech Sunday at the University of Cape Town.

Obama's remarks capped an emotional day that included a visit to the Robben Island prison where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. The 94-year-old anti-apartheid hero has been in hospital for most of this month and is said to be in critical condition.

In deeply personal remarks, the U.S. president spoke of standing in Mandela's cramped prison cell with his two young daughters, Malia and Sasha.

"Seeing them stand within the walls that once surrounded Nelson Mandela, I knew this was an experience they would never forget," he said. "I knew they now appreciated a little bit more that Madiba and other had made for freedom," Obama added, referring to Mandela by his clan name.

Obama address came nearly 50 years after Robert F. Kennedy delivered his famous "Ripple of Hope" speech at the same university, an address that Obama aides said helped inspire the president's remarks. Kennedy's speech, delivered soon after Mandela was sentenced to prison, called on young people to launch a fight against injustice, creating ripples of hope that would "build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."

Laying out his own vision for development on the continent where his father was born, Obama said the U.S. seeks "a partnership that empowers Africans to access greater opportunity in their own lives." He dismissed the notion that the U.S. sought to meddle in Africa's affairs, saying his country would benefit from the continent's ability to manage its own affairs ? economically, politically and militarily.

"Ultimately I believe Africans should make up their own minds about what serves African interests," he said. "We trust your judgment, the judgment of ordinary people. We believe that when you control your destiny ? if you got a handle on your governments ? then governments will promote freedom and opportunity, because that will serve you."

The White House says Obama's electricity initiative, dubbed "Power Africa," symbolizes the type of cross-continent ventures the president seeks. Backed by $7 billion in U.S. investment, the power program will focus on expanding access to electricity in six African countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria and Tanzania.

Private companies ? including General Electric and Symbion Power ? will make an additional $9 billion in commitments. However, those contributions fall well short of the $300 billion the International Energy Agency says would be required to achieve universal electricity access in sub-Saharan Africa by 2030.

The funds are aimed at expanding the reach of power grids and developing geothermal, hydro, wind and solar power.
